Watching Season 1, Episode 3 ot "Wanted Dead or Alive" on Starz.
Steve McQueen is 28 years old. in it
His weapon of choice:is a shortened Winchester Model 1892 from the 40's that he wore strapped to his leg
If he were still alive he'd be older than my 93 year old dad. That freaks me out because McQueen died at 50, but looked like he was in his 30's. I'm 65 now. I think of him at the beginning of Papillon (73) when he was in his 40's, or The Thomas Crown Affair (68), or The Sand Pebbles (66).
Until I thought about this, and looked it up to make sure, I would have sworn he died in auto accident, but did look it up and then remembered he died after a damn cancer surgery. If there were pics of him after he got old looking, I don’t remember seeing them. Just his movies and TV appearances. I don’t want to see pictures of him like that either.
I watch The Sand Pebbles a couple times a month on Fox's movie channel with no commercials. It's one of the old movies Fox rotates from 2 AM- 2:00 PM every day. IF I see it's on, and I have the time, I'll do a reminder and watch iI.
He's just great in it, as a sailor who works a U.S. Navy machinist's mate first class, who runs the engines on a river gunboat in 1920’s China. It’s his only Oscar nomination. Anyway, it’s an awesome movie I saw in the Strand theater in Kosciusko, MS. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. If you have seen it, but not every other week, check it out.
From wikipedia:
According to JustWatch, you can rent it from four or five places, and buy it at two.
Can you think of other guys that you'll never see as anything but the guy every male wanted to be, who pasted away that early.
Maybe a rock star or an athlete died at an age that makes you think that way?

The Sand Pebbles was a critical and commercial success during its general release. It became the fourth highest-grossing film of 1966 and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Steve McQueen, his only Oscar nomination, and eight Golden Globe Awards, with Attenborough winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.

He looked pretty old when he died.
Google images from Tom Horn and The Hunter if you haven’t seen them.
A lot of the aging was cancer, but he was a heavy smoker and outdoorsy guy and definitely looked a lot older than he was.

Having a Mandela effect moment myself. I could have sworn he died much younger like late 20s/early 30s and also in an auto accident.

That is the main romance of Club 27, too. "Forever young" - even Elvis, to a degree, benefits from not ever having been too old (although Fat Elvis is a trope).
Marilyn Monroe, same deal.

I wasn’t a fan of Sand Pebbles, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it. Maybe I need to watch it again.

I think him dying young is a tad over publicized. He was 50, which while still young, isn't exactly James Dean.

I always found McQueen to look several years older than his chronological age, but he kept himself in good physical shape during his lifetime.
But yeah, dealing with cancer, especially back then with not near as much medical treatment available would surely age a person as the disease progressed.

James Dean?
Also, DBT has a great tribute song to Steve.

Yeah, people curiously get them confused.
James Dean is forever young.
McQueen died at an age (50) that was considered fairly old 4 decades ago. James Dean was 24.
