However, it was still just a funny and fantastic as the other seasons.

Oh wait. It gets worse.

Explain why you disliked the last season AND the ending.

Went to a HS graduation ceremony back in the days it was on and there were references to HIMYM given during 2 different speeches.
Seems to certainly had an impact on the kids of that era.

I used to really like this show but hated the ending and haven't seen an ep in years. This thread made me start a rewatch last night and man I'm right back in. It's such a long series idk how far I'll make it but I''m all in on going as far as I can. Awesome show.
this is a horrendous take and I've never seen another one like it. Often you may have a polarizing ending where some love and some hate, like with LOST or Seinfeld. But I can honestly say I've never seen anyone say they even like the ending of HIMYM, much less that it was perfect.
Yes, the show was about the hijinks and stories of the main gang going through life. But you're fooling yourself if you don' think the Mother was a MASSIVE part as well. Even though it was a simple network sitcom, there was still the underlying mystery of the mother. Not to mention it's the friggin title of the damn show. So for years we get little hints and clues building this puzzle. The viewer has been waiting for years to finally get the resolution to this mystery. And then, lo and behold....it paid off! Tracy was awesome! Her and Ted's first little conversation about TM at the train station was perfection and she was an excellent casting choice. So we wait YEARS for this buildup that would practically be impossbile to pull off successfully but guldarn it they did it....
.....and then, they completely shite all over it like 5 episodes later. We wait like 9 years to finally meet the mother, learn her history, get to know her, get to enjoy her, and then practically as quickly as she arrived she's written off. Like what the absolute shite!? If you want to claim the end was great SIMPLY because ted and robin get together in the end, ok. Sure. But you absolutely cannot call the ending "perfect" with the utterly stupid way in which they handled the title character.

As far as the ending, it was perfect. From episode 1, you want the mother to be Robin but they tell you in that episode that it’s not. So in the last season, you learn who the mother is and how Ted loved her. But then the kids tell him that the entire time he told the story, they knew it was because he wanted to tell them about Robin and see if they would be ok with him going after her. And they were. So he ends up with robin in the final scene. Absolutely perfect

Absolutely disagree. The last season is terrible. It drags on and on in a way that none of the other seasons. It is incredibly slow paced for 22 episodes and then breakneck speed for the final 2. I don't know if it was because it was singularly focused or not but I had to force myself to finish. Then, after dedicating 22 episodes to the wedding, it's undone in 5 minutes. Just a complete waste of time. I don't even mind the mom dying. I really liked Tracy and the actress did an amazing job with her limited time but that actually fits and explains why a father would take the time to in detail explain to his kids how he met their mother. There were clues dropped in the show that she was dead that people picked up on. I don't like Ted and Robin ending up together. The show goes out of it's way to show multiple times why they don't work, including a couple of episodes prior to the finale. I know there are years between the wedding and finale but because of rushed final episodes it's immediate to us as watchers. I think the finale could have been fine if they ended the show sooner but by season 9, everyone is out on Ted+Robin.

the problem is that they devoted one entire season to the events of one weekend. I get that it's clever and unique and different and whatever, but dragging out an entire 24 episode season to cover the events of 48 hours realtime is just...well, a drag.

i didn't even mention that in my last post bu tyou're right. We get all this buildup to barney/robin then you blink and it's "eh we decided it wouldn't actually work out"
And to go a step beyond that, I DESPISE in shows when characters that aren't "supposed" to get together do. It's just unnartual and feels wrong. Barney and Robin should have never, ever gotten together and certainly not married. Same with Joey and Rachel, it just feels icky. It'd be like Shawn and Topanga getting married. It's just not natural.

I see it as she served her purpose. The series was about how he met her, not how he spent his time with her after meeting.
He met her
The story was told
It was told how happy he was
But then it goes back full circle to end with the reunion of Ted and Robin years later, years after the mother dies.
The show wasn’t about the mother despite the name, it was about Ted and Robin. The entire story about how he met the mother was told in order to inform the kids about how much he loved Robin. The kids even say it at the end.
The series begins episode 1 with Ted and Robin. The series is a story about Ted and Robin.

But it wasn't, and that was the problem. The last season was literally about Robin marrying Ted's best friend. That's why the ending doesn't work. There's too much negative history between Ted and Robin and fans had checked out on that relationship. I don't even like Barney and Robin together but they were the focus of entire last season, with even Ted saying that he and Robin don't work.

I dislike love triangles and despise people dating multiple people in close friend groups, especially when there's a back and forth. I never liked Barney and Robin but the show beat me over the head with it so much that watching them quickly divorce was actually a let down. I think it was because of how much time was dedicated, just prior, to them being together.

Yeah, this was the worst part of the final season. Don't waste our time leading up to the wedding only to kill it immediately.

Ted saying that he and Robin don't work.
They didn’t work right then… the issue of timing in a relationship was always coming up in the series. Even in the last season, in order for Ted to meet his wife, he had to go through all the breakups and bad romances to become the man he did. He even says if he met the mom a year earlier, she wouldn’t have liked who he was.
Ted found his one. Hell, she was even married before him. But the universe aligned and the timing was right. It was all about the timing. As was he and Robin. Robin traveled the world, had her career, and she was ready. Ted had found his one, had his family, and was ready for his next chapter. The universe aligned.

I forgot how unlikable Ted is

One of my favorite series ever and it very rewatchable.
Barney followed by Robin and Marshal made the show.
You realize Ted is very annoying and Lilly is manipulative on rewatches.
Come to think of it, Ted is similar to Ross on Friends.
Like GOT, the last season kinda ruined the show. I’m ok with Ted ultimately ending up with Robin but the way they did it with the last season just wasn’t good.
