quote:I thought about this a little bit, and the first thing that popped into my mind was how JJ ignores distance in favor of spectacular visual imagery. Remember Star Trek, Old Spock can see Vulcan collapse in the sky like it was the moon from here, and yet he was way too far away to see a planet like that.
No, a solar system dies with it, not an entire galaxy. The Milky Way (not a very big galaxy all things considered) is estimated to have 200-400 billion stars. Plenty of sources to suck energy from.
Now, how the thing moves from star to star...
Here, the Resistance can see the red streak tracing across the sky, like a vapor trail of an airplane. It takes about 10 seconds to reach the planet and destroy it. It's being seen as it happens, so that implies that the Resistance, the Republic, and the base are all within a few light-seconds of each other; and as a point of reference, remember it takes light about 9 minutes to go from the Sun to the Earth, and the distance from here to, say, Saturn, is a good bit further.
From a realism standpoint, that puts everyone within the same approximate orbit, not just in the same system, and definitely not in different parts of the galaxy.
Short answer: don't try to analyze how Starkiller Base travels, because the film doesn't make scientific sense that way.

According to the wikipedia article... so nobody significant I guess.
also says that he was a follower of the Church of the Force, an underground faith of loosely affiliated followers of jedi ideals

Oh believe, it didn't ruin my enjoyment of the film. The "geography" of a galaxy doesn't really matter in Star Wars, and never really has.

The blast from Starkiller Base took a significant amount of time to reach the Republic's planetary system; we had time to observe their reaction, we could watch the blast crawl across the sky from a 3rd person perspective (the Resistance). The Republic could see it coming before it hit. That, dramatically, seems to imply a great distance; so I actually perceived Starkiller Base as fixed in space, and shooting out Sun-blasts across the galaxy.
It didn't have to come for you, it just had to aim AT you, charge up, and fire... and a star's worth of energy would travel across great distances and destroy the target.
That's bad news for the geeks among us- things will look visually spectacular, but there doesn't seem to be much effort to make it scientifically believable. And we're not talking 'Force', we're talking basic spatial distances here.

How much of a time jump do you expect from Episode VII to Episode VIII?
All previous films had a definitive ending, I think, the exception being Empire. While that one ended on a cliffhanger, when Jefi started you realized there needed to be some time for a plan to be put together to infiltrate Jabba's palace.
How in the hell do you time jump an appreciable amount of time from Rey holding out Luke's light saber and finding him after he disappeared?
It will just be a bit weird if Luke is suddenly in the middle of things.

Was it just me, or did Luke seem like the most power being in the universe. Dude just seemed like his power level is far beyond any user of the force.

quote:Not most powerful. Perhaps the most knowledgeable and understanding of the force due to his extended isolation (time to learn/think) but certainly not most powerful. Kylo Ren stopped a blaster rifle in mid air and then Rey was able to overpower him in the interrogation chamber. Neither of them are are anywhere near fully trained. I think as it stands Rey and Snoke are probably the most powerful.

Just saw This again and it was even better. The Feels are so strong in this movie and the acting so good. I'll be watching this endlessly when the blue ray comes out.

Did anyone else think that for a barely space-worthy ship, the Millennium Falcon was able to do some impressive stuff? From the impressive maneuvers on the surface of Jakku, to jumping to light speed inside a freighter, to coming out if lightspeed on the surface of a planet and not exploding into 1 million pieces when it tea bagged the snow.

Well, it's the Millenium Falcon, of course it can do impressive stuff.

It is not a Sci if movie. You lack understanding. Go watch star trek and read AL gores white papers.

Yeah. But I think the other 2 are more powerful/have a higher potential.
