Ya, I'm almost positive there is an explanation that will be revealed.

I'm not optimistic.

It just feels like a typical Disney decision - create some magical new character that defies all logic and structure that has already been established within the lore.

There's no reason Finn should have lasted more than few seconds in that fight either.

OK, please tell me where the movie would have benefited if Rey was male? I can give you plenty why the film benefits with her being female. You're all just coming across as a bunch of sexist, racist idiots. It was a foregone conclusion when the sequels were announced that the protagonist would be female. It just makes perfect sense and makes it fresh.

Let me guess the reasons you think this:

1) He's black
2) He may bang a white girl

And that's pretty much it.

I don't get people's problems with the retreads into old plot lines and nostalgia. This movie was a bridge from the old to new and it was absolutly perfect as that. After the prequels the fans needed to be served well and they needed to reestablish it's greatness. The rest of the movies will tread new waters. They didn't pick a director that has won awards for originality to take the helm of the next movie by accident.

There was absolutely no emotion with Han Solo's death. I felt something when Ben Kenobi dies. I felt something when Gandalf plunges in LOTR. Both had the same amount of screen time. However Abrams kept things so convoluted, you don't get an establishment of relationships. Disappointing. Not a bad movie. Not a great one either. Hopefully the next ones rock it. And hopefully one day they move to different storylines like the Great Jedi Civil War, heck maybe even a movie about Exar-Kun.

Just got back from seeing it for the first time....was anyone else really worried after about the first 15-20 minutes? Thankfully it got more and more awesome as the movie went on...crescendoing perfectly to the ending.

Not at all. We see an affable pilot who is more likable than anyone in the prequels, Kylo Ren butchers a village and freezes a bazooka laser blast in mid-air, they humanize a stormtrooper, and then we have that brilliant silent montage being introduced to Rey. My thoughts were "this is entirely going on the right path".

What? I thought she was the one who said "you can understand that thing" to Han.

That was definitely Finn because the next line was "And he can understand you too so watch it" by Han

We'll just have to disagree. I felt like my heart was getting ripped out in Han's death scene.

Yup I picked up on this the 2nd time too. And when Rey is having her premonition scene after touching the lightsaber you can hear someone whispering "you have taken your first steps into a larger world." And the voice isn't Obi Wan.

Well right before that line Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) definitely says Rey.

There's a clip of it out on the net if you want to listen to it again.

I guess we'll see. I didn't get any takeaway that Finn was force sensitive.

Yeah, I highly doubt he's Force Sensitive. Finn was merely a red herring.

Potential minuscule plot hole, during the lightsaber battle, when the Earth separates from Ren and Rey, wounded Finn is on REN'S side of the separating Earth, yet Rey gets to him. I am 80% certain of this, unless the camera flipped views, which is possible.

Overall, great film. Definitely seeing it again this week. A little too many forced one-liners for my taste, but solid nonetheless. I would let Rey have sex with me.

Sigh

He fit exceptionally well. Poe and Kylo were the best new characters though.

To those saying SJW stuff about the characters: outside the hand holding line I think one of the best things about the movie was that the leads were incredible without feeling politicized. At no point in the movie outside of that one line was I thinking 'oh, she's/he's only female/black for political correctness reasons'. They pulled off their roles amazingly well.

There was a lot of running in that battle when they first started fighting.

You're getting as bad as them on this part. What made the character great was how it was written and that Daisy gave a great performance in the role. You could have changed her to a male and as long as the casting was right, the character would still be great. Now you'd have to change how Finn interacts with her, but that's a whole other subject.

You're a pretty shallow and judgemental person.

1. Finns character is just boring, his back story is boring, his lines are boring. It's got nothing to do with him being black. The fact that you just assume everyone doesn't like because he's black proves to me that you only like him because he is black and you're excited to see a diverse cast.

2. Rey's character, done right, would be able to be played by either sex. If not, then it comes off as a girl power figure. The fact that you assume that everyone who doesn't like is a sexist and the fact that you believe that the only possible way the movie could be done is with a female protagonist proves that you are only excited about Rey being a female is because you are once again more excited about diversity than good storytelling.

Go watch Star Trek if you want a social agenda driven diversity cast. We're talking about Star Wars and it's pretty lazy storytelling in EP VII

Finn wasn't written to be black either. Jesse Plemmons was the initial choice for Finn but once Boyega auditioned they chose him instead. I enjoyed him as Finn. Besides, if he wasn't in the movie, there would have been no black people in this movie and it's already hard as hell to get black people into Star Wars, can you imagine trying to sell them on this movie when only 3 black guys have appeared in the first 6?

At least from my perception, Finn goes down, the other two start fighting, running away from Finn. Earth separates with Ren on Finn's side.

Finn ................................... Ren [Earth] Rey

I don't know. I think her being female adds a level of depth and vulnerability. It makes her all the more badass. Plus I think the average male would be much darker than Rey with her background and wouldn't have waited around for that long with so much optimism. Plus JJ definitely took pages from Miyazaki when it came to the feel of the movie, and of course a female protagonist helps that out.

And aside from the TV series, we've never seen a female Jedi before (aside from in passing, but no spoken lines). It's just obvious that you would have a character like her to be the protagonist in the sequel trilogy.

They're script writers and actors. They could literally make him as dark or optimistic as they wanted to.
