Besides, if he wasn't in the movie,
You don't see that as even more reason not to shoehorn a black actor in?
Every movie doesn't have to be "diverse".
You wouldn't shoot a movie about tribes in darkest Africa and randomly have little Vietnamese dude inexplicably as a main character without some reason.
They never explain, and apparently no one notices, that there happens to be one black guy in the whole galaxy. And just happens to be at the center of the action.
At least they had a plausible excuse for the Honkey in Japan with The Last Samurai.
Finn was a quota character. He could have been done with some dignity like Lando.
Deep down, people know this. But they can't say anything or else they'll be called "racist".

there would have been no black people in this movie and it's already hard as hell to get black people into Star Wars, can you imagine trying to sell them on this movie when only 3 black guys have appeared in the first 6?

Now you'd have to change how Finn interacts with her, but that's a whole other subject.

I don't know. I think her being female adds a level of depth and vulnerability. It makes her all the more badass
Bad arse isn't exactly the word I'd used to describe her. She reminds me a lot of Obi-wan. Lots of pragmatism and an innocent curiosity of the world, but very pragmatic.

Plus I think the average male would be much darker than Rey with her background and wouldn't have waited around for that long with so much optimism.
Well Anakin Skywalker was a slave with his mother and had no father and he seemed like a cheerful little bastard to me, soooo
ETA: And we saw a female Jedi in ROTS for sure and I believe she was in AOTC as well. Besides in the OT, we only saw 5 force users. Leia was force-sensitive, but not a user.

Okay. so each side gets allotted one black guy?
Where do they get them anyway?
You don't see how it's a stretch? I mean, I understand why they Have to do it. But it doesn't make it a plausible, believable reason.

quote:No. He's at times a little too "wacky" for a Star Wars movie. It's why Will Smith was perfect for MIB, but would have sucked in The Matrix.
Let me guess the reasons you think this:
1) He's black
2) He may bang a white girl
And that's pretty much it.
But, most of the jokes in this movie were stupid, so there wasn't much Boyega could have done about it. I thought he was good, though.

One of the X-Wing pilots in the assault on the Starkiller Base was black.
Edit - Beaten.

Okay do you not live in 2015? People like seeing people in movies who look like them. Hollywood has caught onto this. Why do you think all of the movies that are highly successful at the box office have some level of diversity in their cast?

I didn't give a shite about what his race was. He fit the role to me. Oscar Isaac is Guatemalan and I thought he was great in his role and the color of his skin had nothing to do with it. Again, the audition dozens of actors (of many races) for the role of Finn and Boyega won out.
Do I believe that Disney went with race over best casting choice? Hell no. But I bet they didn't mind that the best choice happened to be a black guy for that role.
I wonder how many of you are going to mad in February when we have a bunch of white guys playing Egyptian Gods in Gods of Egypt? I'm guessing none. And for the record, I have no problem with them being white because I happen to be a fan of those actors.

Or at least how Obi Wan should have been, I'll agree. I do get a Miyazaki like feel from the character and particularly her introduction, so that certainly would have suffered if she was male.

Anakin was living like a king compared to what Rey went through. Hell, they have a two bed room apartment with a kitchen and a den. Watto seemed to treat him well and would allow him to get off work early. He also had a lot of friends and people in his life to support him. Hell, his owner would directly finance him to do things he loved. His mother could afford to feed an extra 3 strangers for a few days. Anakin's life was better than half of the planet we currently live on.
Rey's family abandoned her when she was 5 and its nothing short of a miracle she made it into her 20s living on Jakku. She lives among cut throat bastards and no one to support her and only eats scraps of bread. Aside from sex slaves and being highly mentally ill, she has a life towards the bottom 5% of our society. I don't really think the two are comparable.

It is a MOVIE. It is fricking make believe. I don't need my entertainment to work exactly how the real world works. If movies worked exactly how the real world works there would be no such thing as movies because they would all be about people getting up and going to work everyday.
It is a damn movie about Laser swords and people that can do crazy magic tricks and you worried about things like the fact that there aren't many black dudes in it. As if THAT is what is implausible.

On another note, I wish my boy Ello Asty had survived the assault on Starkiller base. RIP Asty, we hardly knew you

No, but they should at least follow their own reality.
You didn't find Ren's light saber ridiculous, as they show it slicing through metal, but any other lightsaber should slice right through the crossbar?
I just want some continuity across the series. Something to make sense

Rey could leave any time she wanted to. She chose to stay there. Anakin had no choice. Her and Anakin's situations were in no way similar. The fact that she had a choice puts her significantly higher on the societal charts then Anakin at the beginning of TPM.
And not to get all history lesson in here, but during slavery in our nation, slaves received a lot of the same treatments that Anakin and his family received too. Doesnt mean they had a good life. They were doing okay... FOR SLAVES.

That is why you are so miserable. You feel the need to be right and vindicated. It's your opinion. That's all it is is your opinion. I love the movie. That is my opinion. Neither of us is right or wrong.
You however are hell bent on screaming from the mountain tops that the movie is bad and one day we will all see how right you are.
It is quite pathetic.

First off I'm not sure if she could leave Jakku before Finn arrived there, but her reasons for being on Jakku are more sad than Anakin's: her severe abandonment issues. Anakin wanted to leave, but I don't think he was a tortured soul at the time like Rey was. She was stuck in her own delusional hell, and had to let it go to become fully realized. She had much more serious issues when we meet her than Luke or Anakin did, but that makes her all the more likable. We root for likable characters when they're faced with opposition.

It wasn't exactly like "Song of the South" if that's where you got your history lesson from.
