It really is that simple. It's meant to be an enjoyble scene, and it was, IMO.

That's what I find funny about debating about what characters can and can't do, and if someone should have won a fight more easily. It's like a bunch of 4th graders sitting around the lunch table arguing over these things. Everything in this movie is fantasy, and can be manipulated in such a manner as to evoke a better story. Sure, there are pre-establish rules, laws, and limits that have been built into the universe surrounding Star Wars. That doesn't mean that there won't be inconsistencies from time to time.

A New Hope would have been a terrible movie had Darth Vader crushed Obi Wan in a single blow, and then used the force to keep Luke and company from getting back onto the Millennium Falcon.

People have also gotten bent out of shape about the similarities between The Force Awakens and A New Hope. However, I think it does a great job of showing a cyclical nature in the Force. Heck, we have had The Death Star, The Death Star II, and now the Starkiller base. I'm calling it now that Ep IX will have a Star Imploader that just imploades a solar system's star to create a massive black hole.

hey guys, just saw TFA for the second time, what did you like better/worse the second viewing? also did you notice anything different or something you missed?

for me, i liked it just as much, if not better. after watching it a second time, im fine with Adam Driver as Ren. he did a good job and get what Abrams is trying to do. hes a confused kid and he needed that gullible look to him.

i didnt like Finn as much, but hes still good. the chick steals the movie

Abrams did a great job with it, and i dont give two shits if its just like a new hope. im glad it is

The second time I saw the movie, I liked certain parts more and certain parts less.

I also noticed a lot of stuff I missed the first time.

So similarly to Darth Vader in the OS, after time he loses his lightsaber abilities because he just didnt use them

Actually, Darth Vader had to change his lightsaber fighting style due to the fact he had 3 mechanical limbs and was in a suit that restricted his movements. In the reading up on some of the Star Wars universe, it stated that Vader had to adjust his fighting style, not necessarily losing his ability.

Nevertheless, I felt your post was well done.

You're correct. I forgot about his left arm also being severed by Obi Won in ROS.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but apparently in the pre-force awakens novel (now canon), Finn was part of a 4-man fire team and ranked at the top of his class in hand to hand combat and blasters, explaining how it took a few minutes to get his arse completely kicked.

The storm trooper who dies in the beginning, was likely part of his fire team, and the other storm trooper he fights with the light saber and who calls him "traitor" is likely one of the other members of his team.

I wish they would have added at least a couple scenes about this at the beginning to establish some emotional gravitas.

I thought he went AWOL on his first combat mission. Doesn't he say something to that effect in the film?

I don't like this, if true. So Finn is supposedly part of a tight group, one gets killed, and he reacts by turning on the others?

Plus, why does he then say he was a janitor on Starkiller base? Do SEALs work in waste management?

To me, it's better off just trying to establish that Storm Troopers in general are just highly trained in combat, and are tougher than they had been portrayed. And that Force users aren't immediately demi-gods.

I'm sure they just meant they all trained together as a "fire team". Could still be his first field mission.

I haven't read the mentioned book, so I'm not sure on the validity of it, but it makes a bit more sense story wise

He worked sanitation while in training. Jakku was one of his first missions.

Yeah, but when asked "what did you do when you worked here?" They're answer is sanitation? As if that were his official position / assignment in the First Order... Rather than just being stuck with scrub work sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, I think it was for comedic effect (and it was a good one) and shouldn't be taken that seriously, but what supposed elite soldier identifies himself as a sanitation worker while he was being trained?

Watched it again this weekend also. It was really good, but there were some really minor things I didn't like:
1. Not sure what purpose the old guy at the beginning served. Maybe he was there watching over Ray and that will be cleared up in time. Would have been a good place to use a character people were familiar with from old movies.
2. Was not real clear to my kids that Kylo Ren made it off star killer base before it exploded. Caused some debate amongst them. A simple shot of him getting out of there would have been good.
3. Not real clear why the entire base exploded. The plan wasnt to blow up the whole thing, just destroy the firing mechanism.
4. There was alot of unexplained carnage. Particularly to Coruscant. Considering jedi archives were there and entire government, the impact of that was kinda understated. That pretty much put everything into a state of complete turmoil.
5. On rewatch its pretty clear Ray is Han and Leias other kid. Chewy shoots her a look at the end when she is piloting the MF that made it real clear to me she was Hans daughter.

Really enjoyed the movie and it was a very promising start to the Disney era of Star Wars.

It wasn't Coruscant. It was the Hosnian System, which was serving as capital of the New Republic. The New Republic rotates capitals.

You are right, I was confused on that. The political setup was a bit confusing. Would have been simpler to just keep New Republic as Leias group vs. First Order. Resistance should have had more resources. They said they lost half their xwing fleet at the end which didn't make sense. Should have more backing than First Order.

The raid on Jakku made it look like the FO ruled the galaxy - that really bugged me.

The film could have given a satisfying answer to the political situation in less than a minute - just a few lines, at most, to give the audience some idea of what was going on. Apparently, there was a deleted scene that would give that.

Kinda a known theory already IMO (the twins, Luke/Leia and Ren/Rey) they almost make it too obvious.

But you cementing it with a look from Chewy is

They can easily edit the text at the beginning of the film to flesh out the story
