The saga did end at ROTJ. This Disney trilogy isnt canon to me and I see a lot of people saying the same.
It doesnt even fit with the original 6 movies.

So a question for those who know. If Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter, and her parents are nobody, is the film just completely silent on who they are or if Palpatine even acknowledges Rey's mother/father as his own child at this point?

From what the leaks have said, yea it pretty much completely leaves it open ended.
There is something about a bounty hunter/assassin that is hunting her down as a child. Everyone thinks it is to kill her, which is why they send her to Jakku and abandon her, but Palpatine said it was just to find her and bring her to him.
That's about all you get.
