As a lifelong fan of this series, why am I hoping this movie bombs and is a complete disaster?

It wont bomb. It was never going to bomb. Theres just too many unthinking idiots that go to anything with "star wars" on it. Disney would love it if everyone on earth went to see their shite without thinking, as long as it makes them the big bucks.

The soft bigotry of low expectations. Disney thinks we're idiots, which is why we get idiot movies.

Because you see that a raging imbecile in Kathleen Kennedy has managed to make a complete mockery of everything you enjoyed in the original series. And you don't want garbage like social justice and virtue signaling included in SW movies.

This is unfortunately probably true. By the numbers, and all else being equal, TROS would have to be seen 25% less than TLJ to come in under $1B. Assuming that the fans that are committed to staying home only saw TLJ once, I don't know that there are enough of these to offset it. Also this being the last of the saga, it will get additional views from casual moviegoers.

Iain Mcdiarmid is great as Palpatine. His role as palpatine is not diminished by being apart of this hot mess. They needed him to save this movie.

Even if it did bomb, the damage to the story is already done.

Our jokes on the board aside, it's not like they are going to remake the trilogy and start with Luke Skywalker, Greatest Jedi Master Ever, waking up from a nightmare.

You're not giving him enough credit.

You're right, of course

How we left Luke as a hero and burgeoning Jedi at the end of ROTJ...That guy was going places!

They should have just killed him in a tragic Nerf stampede.

A bitter, washed up, failure Luke isn’t necessarily a bad way to start the movie. The issue is they didn’t allow for a proper redemption for him, and the idea that he thought about killing his nephew in his sleep is absolutely absurd. If it had been an argument that got out of control, that would make more sense. Maybe, Luke had a wife, Mara, who died with a lot of the apprentices when the new Jedi Temple collapsed due to Ben’s rage. Perhaps Luke blamed himself for their deaths and for Ben’s turn to the darkside, and that traumatic loss and guilt severed his connection to the force, and caused him to go in exile. Rey then reminds a hesitent Luke of who he is and shows, somehow, that Ben still has some good in him. Luke trains Rey and sacrifices himself to save the day in the end. This arc works, so of course, they took the least interesting and accurate take on the character possible instead.

Because you're a lifelong fan of the series and know it isn't even close to what it could be.

I still remember being in the theater with my wife, that scene playing, her turning to me and saying "what the frick". She never cusses either.

Sat around sulking while the first order came to power

If they had really wanted to subvert expectations, they could have made Luke the founder of the First Order. He realized that the New Republic wasn’t working, and that a peace needed to be made to incorporate the surviving imperial remnants into the new republic, which also needed a capable defense force, and that stability was needed to combat some existential threat to the galaxy. This caused the rift between Ben and his family, and tears the Solo marriage apart. Luke thought he was doing what was best, but Kylo betrayed him for power and twisted Luke’s first order and turned it against the Republic. Luke could have been injured in the fight, explaining how Kylo was able to best him. He realizes his error, and sulks in exile, wounded and defeated, as the monster he created to protect the galaxy instead turns on it.

But what does this have to do with social justice, diversity, and winning wars with love?

Leia has been unnaturally elevated in the star wars universe.

For such a "meh" actress, I'm not sure how Carrie Fisher achieved such iconic fame by the end of her life.

If Mark Hamill or Harrison Ford died tomorrow, the reaction wouldn't be nearly the same.

The first order and resistance are forced to unite against a common enemy while accepting their differences and flaws, putting aside their inherent biases. It ends up that they have more in common than in difference, and they embrace both to save the galaxy side by side.

What I don't understand is how Rey can be a freaking Palpatine. Did he have a love child with Padme when we weren't looking? The dude was portrayed as asexual for the entirety of the franchise.

Gonna be honest, in the prequels as a kid I thought he toed the gay line.

You're only making it worse by coming up with infinitely better ideas, on the spot. It shows that RJs movie could have been improved just by pulling the grip aside and asking "Okay, what happens next" after every scene.

I was hoping that the spoilers were fake, but the pictures and idiot twitter reviews sealed the deal. Like TLJ, I'll be waiting for TRoS on streaming services. Unfortunately, if the movie is trash, the box office take will still reach the billions and KK will get an "atta girl" affirmation on the direction of the trilogy.
