he left Sloan at 5:45. His dad is coming home from downtown and mom is bringing Jean home from the police station.

They also lived outside Chicago, so they may have had school while Chicago schools did not.

They would not have a parade going on the same day, same time as a Cubs game. It would be a nightmare with security, patrols, traffic. It did not make sense.

Why would that not make sense? Wrigley Field is nowhere near the Miracle Mile area downtown where the parade was.

Columbus Day parade

Columbus Day was on Oct 13th in 1986

Oct 13th would have been game 7 of the National League Championships which if the Cubs were playing a day game, every child would have skipped school that day.

Wrigley is like 5 miles from N. Dearborn St

Street Sign visible in back ground at the 1:04 mark of the YouTube video of parade

I'll concede to your superior knowledge of FBDO. I was thinking the dad was coming home early to check on him, that the mom left work early to pick up Jennifer Grey, and the Principal had to hitch a ride back to school on a school bus full of kids so I was thinking it was earlier.

If you take things this seriously, why would you even watch a movie like FBDO? Why would you watch anything other than a documentary at all?

Found this timeline which could explain everything...

7am - Ferris Sick - family leaves, plays clarinet in his robe, showers

8am - Schools starts, calls friends barf noises on computer, Ferris at pool calls Cameron to come over

9am - Gets Ferrari, picks up Sloane, drives to city (est 30min trip)

10am - Arrive in DT Chicago, top of Sears Tower

11am - Stock Trade then to lunch (steal 1145 Abe Froman reservation)

Noon - Lunch

130pm to 4pm - Cubs Game (catches ball bottom of 5th inning est 4pm)

4pm - Art Institute & Parade

5pm - Get Car, drive home, Cam freak out, jacuzzi at Slones house

6pm - Destroy car, walk Slone home, Ferris runs home

630p - Rooney and Ferris meet, parents home, "life moves pretty fast"

Pretty neat.

Still doesn't answer why the full school bus picked him up at after 6...

Also: School year is late Aug to early June

Cubs season was April to September in 86

Weather is pretty nice for Chicago - Ferris is siting outside in swim suit, but also needs a light jacket

So is it August or September? Ferris has been absent 9 times so likely not.

Most likely its April or May - end of school year - high school kids pondering what life after graduation looks like (typical John Hughes plot)

Judging by who he sits next to, its the bus for special education kids who have to stay after school for remedial education.

couple issues with this one.
first its the top of the inning, because the Braves are batting.

also it's sometime after the 5th inning because Harry Caray says "the first hit since the 5th inning"

safe to say it's probably at least a couple innings after for him to word it like that.

edit to add:
Lee Smith is pitching. He was their closer, so game is most likely in the 9th inning.

the Ivy is already green in the video, so game would have to be no earlier than late May.

Always assumed it was late in the year because Rooney was talking about holding him back for another year and Ferris was contemplating not seeing Cameron or Sloane the following year. That's talk that occurs toward the end of the year, not the beginning of senior year.

Nah, it's just the regular bus.

Check it out.

May could line up with Stanley Cup, but NBA finals would have been mid-June. I just don't follow the NHL enough to know if the Black Hawks were good enough to consider them possibly having a championship parade back in the 80s

there are plenty of nits to pick with the movie, like why is a school bus in a suburban district running with a school bus full of kids at 6 PM.

Also, I think they got Sloan out at 3rd period. Assuming school started at 7:30, that would be 9:30/10 am, putting them parking the Ferrari at 10:30 at best. Considering the time they took to drive back from downtown, the interlude at Lake Michigan, killing the car and going back to Sloan's, then the latest they left the garage would have been 3:30.

So, could they have done all that in 5 hours?

Arguably yes.

45-60 mins at the Museum (which is near the lake not too far from the Navy Pier)
Lunch - Hour
Merchantile Exchange - 15-30 minutes
Catch a few innings of a "businessman's special" Cubs game (those usually started at noon) - Hour-hour and a half
Catch the parade and get the car in the time remaining.

Definitely doable.

Of course, with cell phones and tracking (find friends, Life 360) and social media, the premise of this movie would be impossible today

Does running it in reverse actually decrease the odometer

Arguably, it could have of they drive it backwards with all 4 tires on the road, or on a rack with the rear tires connected to front tires with a strap/band to turn them (because the odometer is connected to the front wheels).

don't know about Ferraris, but the '65 Mustang I had the gear was in the transmission, so lifting just the rear wheels did roll the speedometer backwards.

yes i tried it because of the movie
