I’m rewatching the series and a question about Gus Fring came to mind.
He has all this drug money and puts his life on the line, plus the obvious legal risks for what?
He never gets the time to spend any of the money, and he’s always slaving away at his chicken restaurant. What’s the point?
If he’s going to work all the time at a legitimate business and not enjoy the spoils of his drug money, why not simply be a legitimate business man only?
You never see him partying, you don’t see him with girls, he’s got a big house, but he could have that with his chicken franchises, he doesn’t even drive a fancy car. It just seems pointless to take all that risk for a reward that you can never enjoy.

I thought Gus was motivated by the murder of his friend (lover?) Max by Don Eladio and Hector both to be successful, and to eventually get revenge against them. Something like that.

True, but that wouldn’t stop him from delegating some of his daily chicken franchise duties to managers and enjoy his spoils along the way.
He’s always working.

He was motivated to defeat Don Ellado (sp?)... and some people aren’t motivated by money, but power and control.

But people in power usually want to flaunt that power by showing off their possessions.

It does seem like a person like that would burn out mentally at some point.

Maybe his chicken restaurants aren't as financially stable as it would seem, and it's the drug money that is keeping everything afloat?

Do you want a show that follows Gus on his leisure days?

This is a TV show. You have to figure Gus had some sort of life outside of the drug business. Gus was a careful man. It is not a stretch to imagine that he was careful not to reveal anything personal to anyone in his business.

Gus attended barbecues at the DEA chief's house, he knew how to party and keep his business in mind as well.

And Gus did want revenge, so it makes sense that he worked a lot.

this is how he got so high up the organized crime chain. He was inconspicuous, cunning, and patient. flaunting your swag is an easy way to get caught or robbed. I think you missed a fundamental character quality of gus. He was in it for survival after don heladio demonstrated that gus and his partner were expendable.

His front as a chicken man is what enables him to have power and he takes it seriously. Remember he uses his legit business for his illegitimate one.

It’s also part of the cover. I think they cover it in Better Call Saul when that nerdy scientist buys that massive Hummer after selling pills to Nacho. It’s just a huge red flag to the authorities. Gus gets by under a persona and I think he was just consumed with fricking the Cartel over for revenge. Plus he just doesn’t seem like the flashy type. He had a nice house but he doesn’t strike me as a partier or even a man of luxury.

Not to derail the topic but couldn't the same argument be made for Walt. Here he has a storage unit packed with lord knows how many millions in cash with no legitimate way to enjoy it without sending up red flags to the authorities.

In my mind that's got to be the worst feeling in the world, to have all that money and not be able to spend it.

No. Walt wasn't in it for the money. Sure he bought nice cars, but it was the power he was after. He wanted to be THE KINGPIN!! It's what eventually killed him. He made way more than he had ever needed when he went into it. He could have bailed afterwards and just lived quietly until death. Money was irrelevant to Walt.

Gus's whole character is kinda supposed to be this cold machine that does things without much explanation. Walt's initial motivation was money for his family but he ended up becoming like Gus in that it became all about winning. Gus is a psychopathic cold blooded murderer but a sophisticated one, he doesn't give a shite about money he just wants to win the chess game

Instead of starting a new thread, going to post this here.
Currently on 4th re-watch.
In the episode that Gus invites Walter to his home to "break bread", as Walt walks in I believe there are some children's toys in the background. Also a bumper walker that a toddler would use.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Also, Gus says something about kids never liking what he cooks.

He’s obviously a very peculiar guy, so maybe he’s the type that likes being busy and knowing he’s making millions, maybe for some future endeavors, and isn’t interested in things normal people would consider “fun.”

And that's how people in his line of work draw attention and eventually get caught. And like another poster said, not all people are motivated by money

Didn't Walt do it precisely FOR the money? To keep his family cared for once the cancer costs were met?

At the start, but that obviously wasn't the only thing driving him.
