according to wiki, it had reached number one twice before ww came out
Right, and #2 because of Wayne's World.
That's the point of the thread.

Yea this thread is pretty stupid but in his defense it introduced the song more into pop culture and to a younger crowd no doubt making it more popular than it ever had been previously.
It peaked at #9 on the US charts in 1976.
It peaked at #2 on the US charts in 1992.
HOWEVER, for the YEAR of 1976, it ranked #18 in the US, and for the YEAR of 1992, it ranked #39.

FWIW, I don't ever remember hearing it before WW.
Really? I'm not sure how to feel about that.
Old is the appropriate feeling.

I guess if you weren't really into Queen before that, I could agree with you.
Here are some that I think were either revived or became greatly more popular after their movie appearances:
The Final Countdown (Rocky IV)
Johnny B Good (BTTF)
Tiny Dancer (Almost Famous) - I'd say this one fits your OP description perfectly.
Twist and Shout (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
Those are four that come to mind right now.

I remember it being "that Wayne's World song." I knew it was an oder Queen song, but wasn't familiar with it before that movie.
92.3 use to play it regularly before Wayne World.
Stand By Me - Stand by Me movie.
Twist and Shout - Ferris Bueller

Hallelujah - Shrek.
I had never heard that song before Shrek, and at first assumed it was written for Shrek!

Ok, so my last post, I wasn't aware of the rules on this. My bad.
How about This is the End, by the Doors? I can't hear that song today without thinking Apocalypse Now.
And if not that, Aerosmith's Dude Looks Like a Lady for Mrs. Doubtfire.
