Do they even have any kind of traditional overhead to speak of? Just intellectual property expenses like this friends deal? They're making some money.

They have some pretty complicated AI going on. Most of the expenses outside of original content and rights to other shows would have to be related to S&B and hardware.

re: So apparently Netflix paid $100 million to keep Friends
Netflix is also following the old Amazon business model of the early 2000s. They are willing to take on millions, or even billions in debt, and essentially pump out so much content no one else can keep up, all while steadily chipping away at others market share.

Then, once they have damn near taken complete control of the industry, that debt is paid down and the profits soar, thus becoming an almost unstoppable behemoth. .

In turn during all this, their competitors slowly go out of business, and, if they see fit, Netflix buys up their company for pennies on the dollar, then repackages it and reinvests in it since it's now their own.

Look at movie theaters. Why do you think Amazon and/or Netflix are eyeing purchasing one of these fledgeleing chains, when they themselves are one of the primary factors as to why some are failing?

They make out like bandits. Not only can they get a great deal on theaters, but in the future they show their $100 million original movies IN those theaters for folks still wanting that experience, along with pumping money into them because they so much surplus to do so, and upgrading and making the locations more attractive for regular studio pictures.

It's almost all like a self-fulfilling business prophecy. You just have to be willing to take the losses before you conquer your enemies.

The thing is, Amazon has been doing things that everyone else has been having trouble figuring out. Netflix's competition OTOH is only heating up, with everyone from Amazon to Apple to Disney and so forth getting in on the action, and Disney is going to be removing some extremely popular content from Netflix in the near future. Amazon had AWS to fund everything, and Apple and Disney are rich and diverse. Netflix is just Netflix, and they are burning cash like crazy.

I'm just mad they kept friends and not:
Community
Chuck
Friday Night Lights
Seinfeld
24

Really don't care for "Friends". It's just corny without being all that funny in my opinion.

Honestly this money should have been used to build upon/create more originals or gain rights to a different popular franchise/show.
Thoughts?

They have the internal metrics. They wouldn't have paid that much if the numbers didn't add up.

Just because folks in the US are tired of Friends doesn't mean it isn't a huge driver of traffic to their site worldwide.

They have actual metrics and not some statistical model for ratings. The show must be very popular or they wouldn't have paid that much.

Netflix annual gross revenue is probably north of 15 billion for 2018.

137 millions subscribers paying an average of $10 a month.

Wouldn't they need nearly 10 million people to sign up only to watch Friends for this to be profitable?

I mean, I'm probably thinking of it way too generally, but I struggle to see how that ends up being positive value.

There are plenty of people that use the tv for background noise/sleep aid that needs tons of familiar, low attention content.

This is why the wife and I watch Scrubs or X-Files when we go to bed.

Everybody loves a new series for a day or a couple weeks.

I wonder what the long term viability of their original content will be down the line. Since none of it gets syndicated on OTA or cable TV it's not going to get the kind of repeated airings that make shows evergreen. For example, Big Bang Theory didn't turn into BIG BANG THEORY until it was on TBS all day every day. Do people watch original streaming content they way they might a syndicated show that they settle on b/c it's something familiar?

At least Chuck is currently on Amazon Prime video. Hopefully, it stays there until it is time for a rewatch.

900,000 would clear 8% gross profit @ $10 per month per subscriber.

No. Not at all. What if they lost 10 million because that many regularly watch friends. They also don't need 10 million. 1 million people paying for a year covers that cost.

I don't understand how this is hard to understand. they know the 100% actual number of people watching the show. This isn't some pie in the sky Nielsen ratings. They can see the actual traffic to the site and to each video. They wouldn't have paid that much if people weren't watching it or if it wasn't still wildly popular worldwide.

I love lucy was still one of the number one shows worldwide in syndication almost 40 years after it went off the air. Just because you hate Friends doesn't mean one of the highest rated series in history is somehow garbage to the rest of the world.

It all depends on how many people were still watching it on Netflix. If the numbers support paying that for it, then its the right thing to do

These are business decisions. Not emotional decisions

The Tin Roof here hosts a Friends trivia night occasionally and it’s always so packed that they have to add an extra night.

I never got into it but virtually every chick my age I know did.
