Yeah, I didn't change the channel, but it was all downhill after they rang the door bell.

Yeah, pretty typical SNL show. Decent start, host holds their own, musical guest plays their hit, Weekend Update, then an ending that gets drug out with a lot of commercials and marginal sketch writing.

eta: I would have quit watching after Weekend Update if it weren't for Jen Lawrence. I need to be able to tell her "yes, I did watch the whole thing" when she drunk dials me in 3 or 4 hours.

How could Chappelle Show be consistently funny uring it's run with like 10 people doing everything and NBC fail so badly with SNL

This cast is awful

I know some people don't like the commercials but the Starbucks Verrisimo(or whatever) commercial was pretty good.

It was pretty funny

All in all, I enjoyed the episode. As far as this season's standards go (of which many of you will address as shitty, only to change the tune ten years later like every SNL season ever) I'll give it a 7/10.

Some observations: Weekend Update was fantastic, as usual. I wish we'd get some more Stefon while Hader is still on the cast, but Second Hand News Guy is almost as funny.
On that note, Bobby Moynihan was the lone bright spot in a couple sketches; he's got that special something . It's probably the fat thing, but that dude is hysterical.
Unlike the first half of the season, this musical guest was very meh. First song really wasn't that bad, actually kinda sounded familiar, but that second song blew hard. At least we get to look forward to Justin Bieber in three weeks
Jennifer Lawrence really held her own out there. And damn she fine.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

Hopefully you can agree with me in saying the older members of Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Myers, and Jason Sudeikis are all very funny and worthy of the SNL cast.

That leaves the others

Kenan Thompson (around since 2003) while, in my opinion, is on the decline, is a very funny and necessary familiar face. While he was hardly in a sketch this past week, he's still a heavy contributor, and carries on one of my favorite characters "Jean K. Jean."
Bobby Moynihan (since 2008) is the token fat guy, and is absolutely hilarious. I sometimes feel like he's the lone bright spot in sketches, because he seems to take any failing, lame sketch and breathe some goddamn life into it.
Nasim Pedrad is hot, and that's about it. She's nothing that great, I'll give you that.
Vanessa Bayer is a little better. She's no Amy Poehler or Tina Fey, but she's just alright. Gotta weird jew mouth.
Taran Killam has so much potential. Not necessarily Jimmy Fallon or Andy Samberg potential, but he'll be great nonetheless. I like him, and I think he's the funnier part of some sketches.
Jay Pharoah is and will be brilliant. His impression of Obama is goddamned spot-on and, dare I say, right "up there" with Darrell Hammond's Bill Clinton. Also, if you know who Stephen A. Smith is, watch Pharoah's impression. Albeit a tad overdone, it was fantastic.

Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, and Tim Robinson all don't count since they are featured cast members. Don't base your opinions of this season's cast on the performance of any of these four. Although I wish they wouldn't give Bryant so many sketches; she isn't really that good. Robinson is my favorite, but all of them aren't really that special...yet. McKinnon is super hot, but damned if she isn't a lesbian

All of these guys are solid. Not every sketch or bit works, but that's been the case since SNL started.

With good material, I like him.

Bobby Moynihan

Sorry, it seems like I enjoy maybe 20% of his performances.

Decent and will get better.

Cecily Strong

She's got a couple of good bits, I think.

Chappelle only was around for 2-3 seasons so he was done before it ever got old

That's a pretty terrible comparison. Chappelle was around for 2+ seasons and wasn't done live. SNL is done live and is almost 40 years old.

This.

It was downhill after the Hunger Games presser which was average at best but elevated in comparison to the rest.

Waitress skit and the civil war bit were good too. I missed the very beginning.

The added pressure of a live show and how long it's been on the air doesn't explain poor quality

He wrote a sketch show for 3 seasons and it was funnier than anything SNL has done in 15+ years

I know every sketch can't be money, that goes with the territory of only having a single week to write an entire show's worth of material. Anyone who believes every sketch was money back in the old days of SNL is fooling themselves or just loves nostalgia. That being said, the writing of today is vastly inferior to what it was ten years ago. There are very few, if any, memorable sketches that are on par with some of the all-time greats. Anytime writers have to resort to nothing but bathroom humor you know you need to hire yourselves some new ones.
