One's a complete loon (Michael) who just wants everyone to like him. He is a terrible human being and puts himself ahead of everyone. He undermines things for his gain and puts others in a bad spot for his benefit

One's a complete psycho (Jan) who is completely self destructive. They expect the absolute worst in everything and when it happens, they lose their shite. They both understand that their life sucks and that everyone will be much happier than them. This mainly Season 1 - 4 Jan, though.

ehhhhh not sure I really agree with that. Michael is an innocent loveable goof that above all else just wants companionship (romantically as well as friends). Was very caring to his friends and subordinates and loved the hell out of Dunder Mifflin. Jan was a corporate hardass that did her job well until burning out then just kinda coasted. Self-destructive for sure though no argument there.

George is a certified sociopath that doesn't really care about anything or anyone, other than his 1 or 2 close friends. Hates work and does everything possible to avoid doing any real work. Hates his parents, dislikes just about most people he encounters. Selfish to a fault, cheap, manipulative, inconsiderate.

I mean sure you can find 1 or 2 character traits in just about any 2 random characters that have ever appeared on TV, but I don't really see any of michael or jan in George. Nothing to a noticeable degree anyway.

What? I don’t get that at all. Michael desires two things, friendship and companionship. He often goes above and beyond for both to a fault.

He is an attention whore

He will do anything to put the spotlight on himself

Outing Oscar?
Using the Ed Truck thing as a sympathy event?
Kevin's skin cancer and tricking everyone into "getting out of the office", but it was actaully his party as a skate rink.
I can go on and on, but Michael was a terrible, terrible person.

Man, you're misreading Michael big time.

He's an idiot with a great soul. Definitely not a terrible human being. Did you even watch that show?

I watch the show way too much.

Michael desires attention and will do anything he can to get attention. I get that he ultimately wants companionship

Anyone that doubts Michael is a terrible person- watch the one with Phyllis's wedding. Most cringeworthy episode of the run.

Michael Scott is amazing. He also has the benefit of proving his worth by the huge drop off when his character left the show. Not many other main characters can say "Hey, look what happened when I left" since they do not normally leave.

My personal favorite in terms of Sitcom characters that also has a lot of growth in a show is Doctor Cox from Scrubs. Yes he is a hardass prick with lots of one liners, but he does a great job of growing as the season's went by.

As someone else said, watching him can be positively cringe worthy at times. He's a great person and a horrible person, but he ends on a good note by his finale.

Every character mentioned in this thread, thus far, is a solid choice. My favorite will always be Jethro Bodine.

First sentence--solid. Jethro Bodine? Really?

Add Kramer to the list and that would be my top 5.

The worst thing Mike ever tried to do was keep the bonus for himself.

I really need to get back into Peep Show. I ripped through the first 3 seasons a long time ago and never picked it back up

And of course Max Baer, Jr. is still with us (just made 81) and the only surviving member of the cast. The simultaneously subtle and unsubtle touches he put on that character was really something to watch in hindsight. All of the acting (except, really, Louisiana's own Donna Dixon) on the show was surprisingly good for such a vehicle and product.

He played Jethro as both intimidating and childlike, ignorant and clever, traveled and parochial - I mean, we look at the surface and think "Jethro Bodine", but the layers he was able to add to that character is pretty impressive for an actor from a long line of boxers.

Ron Swanson is particularly notable in that I can't recall another sitcom character being rewritten mid-series because they were too popular.

This. Parks and rec is the female ghostbusters version of the office so they couldn’t have a popular male character

Let's be honest, Mike made that promise before the show started and if they deserved such a handout, the government would have given it to them threefold
