Showtime dictated what Dexter's fate would be in finale? (Spoilers)

“They won't let us kill him,” Goldwyn said of the network’s constructive note for the show that was once thought to be predicated on the suspense that its character might end up dead or in jail, until we all realized it was really about the suspense of whether he’d get to be in love or in the lumberyard. “Showtime was very clear about that. When we told them the arc for the last season, they just said, 'Just to be clear, he's going to live.'” With this creative suggestion in the form of a network mandate—which is definitely in keeping with Showtime’s insistence that Dexter is Batman, and its attendant hope he could similarly just go on forever—the producers were forced to find some other ending for what Goldwyn called its “very core loyal following,” one that provided the only logical conclusion to the story they'd been watching.

I can believe that the suits were making demands like that but there were still a lot of different directions they could have gone that would have sucked less.

Reading that, it now seems like they threw a hissy fit and screamed in the writer's room "Oh, so you want him to live????? Well, HOW BOUT THESE APPLES!!!"

having that and the BB finale so close together was quite the contrast.

Just when I thought the finale was out of my mind.

That's pretty much what I thought when I read it.

I keep wondering if I'm going to finish this show or not. I think I got through 4 or 5 seasons of it.

I thought the Edward James Olmos season was OK. Last season was pretty bad, worst of the series.

SPOILERS

quote:

Fortunately, it found it in an ending where Dexter’s secret dies with the character whose body he unceremoniously dumps into the ocean—leaving every single other person who cared about her haunted by her disappearance forever, yet still believing that Dexter was super cool, despite his always being really weird and aloof (because donuts)—and Dexter is at last able to pawn off his son for good on some other poor woman, this time a fellow murderer. Meanwhile, he goes off to live in the woods, having officially learned nothing, but definitely a little sad. This satisfied Dexter’s very core loyal following of total masochists.

That's how the show ended? Wow, that's pretty terrible. I've only seen a few episodes, and never really cared to get deep into the series.

I'm not familiar with how the chain of command works, but what would happen if the writers were like "uhhh, noo...we already have an end in mind and he dies" and shotime said "no, we'll say again, he will live".

What could happen? If the writers said "frick yall, we're the writers" there's no way shotime would have the audacity to just not air a finale right? Would they fire them immediately and bring in some ragtag group of writers to make an ending to their satisfaction?

Good thing Breaking Bad wasn't on Showtime.

I wonder if HBO gave Chase similar marching orders a la Tony.

WHAT??? Showtime is CBS premium. Have you seen Homeland? Ray Donovan? House of Lies? Episodes?

I'm not saying HBO is less awesome, I love GoT and The Newsroom and The Sopranos, and Entourage..haven't watched em all, but getting there. Okay, Weeds and Dexter turned for the worst. But the rest of Showtime..solid shite. Absolutely not second rate.
