I have a buddy who won't watch "recovery" movies where the character is struggling with drug addiction. I don't like movies that ask me to suspend rational thought to accept the premise (like bad science fiction). I have heard a LOT of people saying they are burned out on Holocaust movies. I think a LOT of white people have Black-Angst Fatigue, particularly in light of Ferguson, NYC, Sharpton and all that. It's not unusual that many white people would choose to watch something that affirms them or makes them feel good or positive in light of what is happening right now. While blacks will flock to the movie for a film that affirms them and chronicles an important chapter in their history. Many people are just tired of guilt trips or being lectured to. Not just about race, but about all kinds of things. And of course, if the numbers are mediocre, the usual suspects will use it as evidence to prove one thesis or another that reaffirms their ideology. Personally, like every other movie, I'll watch it on my television in 6 months. I have every movie channel known to man and a 15 film backlog on my DVR.

Why is it that any movie that deals with history and race, whether 12 Years a Slave or Selma, is assumed to be intended to create "white guilt"? These are stories of extraordinary times and people. I understand that the subject matter can be uncomfortable. It sometimes is for me, but I go to enjoy a good movie n the end.

I didn't say that it's intended to be that. I think it's intended to be Film/Commerce that has a point of view and makes a profit. More power to it. I'm just saying that a LOT of people avoid films that THEY THINK might be preachy "message" films. Because they've been there done that. Not everybody is a cinephile, most people just want to enjoy the afternoon with a flick. Personally, I can't take it right now. I can't even take the news after this week. I'm all about watching a ball game and getting my mind off Global Jihad.

And big Up Vote Ralph. That's like 5 up votes in the last couple of weeks. I'm slipping badly.

Pretty much this. I'll seek out actual documentaries that may play less loosely with the facts if I wish to know more about a time in history or I'll pick up a book. If I'm paying, entertain me.

These movies are valid both historically and artistically. If you hate these movies because you'll get home and see people saying "hands up don't shoot" on the news and ignoring other racial issues, I understand that to some extent. I'll be happy to have a frank conversation about Selma if we can keep the frankness in talking about the present. But we all know how difficult that is.

I recognize we should be able to do the former regardless of the latter, but i get the frustration.

Exceptional movie. Can't say enough about how good David Oyelowo was as King. Those close up shots of him reacting in the scene at the morgue and Oval Office were phenomenal.

FINALLY got to see this last night. I almost didn't after reading this thread last year. After seeing it, I have to say, I just don't see why anyone was concerned. The movie fairly and accurately told a story that has basically never been depicted in film before.

John Lewis is the unsung badass of the entire ordeal.

I actually found it weak. Now, let me be clear. I have an irrational hatred for slow mo.

However even on the topic, I found Boycott to be far superior.

Jimmie Lee Jackson was killed in Marion and not Selma. I drive by his grave everyday, his headstone is disfigured from multiple shotgun blasts. Not only is the movie not accurate but the neither are the history books pertaining to LBJ and King.

I can't think of a single historical pic like this that didn't have to condense things to make a 2 hour movie.

I wonder how many people won't watch Band of Brothers because of some of the similar changes.

It has a 100% on RT because critics are scared to be called racist if they rip it.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened for Larry Wilmore's show.
