and how do they determine what she’s owed when Disney took away the only opportunity to find out?

Expert guessing realy

This isn’t the first breach of contract case in the world.

In a related note, Brie Larson is suing Disney for releasing Captain Marvel in theaters instead of pushing it straight to VHS.

The only ethical option that was ever on the table was for Disney to go to Scar Jo with an offer of a percentage of streaming revenue when they decided to not have an exclusive theatrical release. If studios want to pay performers on performance then they need to step up and pay them for performance on new models that were not planned when the original contract was signed.

agreement with Disney’s Marvel Entertainment guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release, and her salary was based in large part on the box-office performance

The Mouse knew exactly what it was doing. They tried to pull a fast on in her and reduce her back end, which, in turn makes more Disney.

Disney+ probably wasn't even a thought in her head when that contract was signed years ago and all her box office incentives are tied soley to theater revenues.

She probably lost out on tens of millions. She also knows that her career is almost over as she approaches 40, so she can piss off the hand that fed her for 15 years now, plus her character is already dead.

Then again...piss on her.

More importantly is that he Marvel career is over. Doubt she would have done this if she had more movies to come but her character is done

Disney seems to be playing the emotional angle. I'm sorry, but Scarlett Johansson seems to have a point here. If her contract says she gets a certain percentage of the gross on the back end, and there was no back end to be had, Disney is in breach of contract.

Gal Gadot

She owns DCEU for the foreseeable future. She has a lot of leverage going forward.

ScarJo is talented and valuable, but she's already aged out of MCEU, had her character killed AND they have a new Black Widow already picked out. A Black Widow that is more than a decade younger.

I just don't think it makes sense to take on the House of Mouse so publicly at this point in history. Maybe it will work out for her.

I agree, but it doesn't really cut both ways. Disney can do whatever with whomever in the future and do not have to deal with her ever again.

She, on the other hand, is facing a buyer's market for her acting services. She's out of the only major franchise she was in - she can start over (at damned near 40) somewhere else or start taking on MILF roles in comedies.

I don't know what else to tell her - her hand is strong on this single issue. It isn't for the next 10, 15 years of doing big budget/big payday films.

I maintain that ScarJo is dumb for doing this (not enforcing her rights, but so publicly and so soon after the film's release), Disney's response is dumber.

Disney is trying to get into a "dumb off" with ScarJo. :letthatsinkin:

According to the reporting in Variety she, her agent, and her agency all reached out to Disney to rework her deal when they announced it was going to release on D+ but Disney refused to call any of them back. I'm not sure there was much more her they could do behind the scenes if Disney has straight ghosted them.

Combine what we are learning here with the fact that Disney didn't try very hard to push BW into Chinese theaters before their 100 year CCP month long celebration that nixed any HW releases and it makes me wonder if their bean counters figured out that they could make more money by purposely keeping the movie's box office run under certain threshold so that they wouldn't have to pay her the salary bonuses.

They know for sure that a movie's BO usually gets hammered by illegal downloads when it releases late in China and w/China keeping the bulk of the profits anyway the movie hitting a certain number in gross profits could have been a negative for them in the long run.

It could be that they ran a version of the scheme from The Producers.

These Hollywood looney left-wingers who condemn greedy people who want to keep more of the money they earn SURE DO LIKE getting THEIR money.

Screw Disney and her.
