When I was a kid there was a TV movie called "The Night Stalker" (later turned into the TV series "Kolchak: The Night Stalker") about a vampire terrorizing Las Vegas. It scared the daylights out of me and all the kids were talking about it in school the next day. My brother and I were watching it when the phone in the kitchen rang and we were too scared to answer it. Watched it recently on You Tube and it holds up pretty well.

The Night Stalker garnered the highest ratings of any TV movie at that time (33.2 rating - 54 share). That resulted in a 1973 follow-up movie called The Night Strangler and a planned 1974 movie titled The Night Killers which instead evolved into the 1974-75 television series titled Kolchak: The Night Stalker, with McGavin reprising his role in both.

Candyman got me as a kid. Friday the 13th and Jason movies were a joke after I watched it. It was my first real horror movie so that may be why it got to me so good.

The Excorcist
and
Nightmare on Elm Street. When Freddy extended those arms out the first time we saw him... damn that was scary. If you want a trip down memory lane....

Event Horizon got me good. That and Frailty put me off horror movies for a long time. I watched Frailty on basic cable on like a Sunday afternoon and it still scared the bejesus out of me.
Put me in the camp that was scared of ET as a kid, especially when he turns chalk white and the NASA guys in hazmat suits pick him up.

That was great and the ending sequence was really creepy.
Also- honorable mention:
The Fog (original) was really scary - the scene when the body gets up and walks towards Curtis ....
Also the ending of Prince of Darkness with the figure standing in the doorway.
Carpenter was a master.

Poltergeist fricked me up hard. My aunt had a life size clown sitting at her dining room table and I hated going to her house.
#1 by far was something that is know as the McPherson Tape or UFO Abduction. It's Blair Witch but with UFOs before there was Blair Witch. A local public channel aired it as if it was real and I was too young to know it was an Orson Welles type spoof boardcast. I was scared of getting abducted by aliens for months

The only recurring nightmare I've ever had was about the snake man from Dreamscape.
