Eh, I think it's different.
I can watch a band do a song live 100 times on YouTube but I still want to be a part of it in person.
I think for the vast majority of people that's not the same thing for comedians. While personally I will listen to the same bit repetitively and appreciate it every time, I just don't think there is nearly as much "experience" value in live comedy covering the same material vs. music (for most people).
So I think that factors into how closely they'd want to safeguard material for a special. I don't think a rock band cares as much if a life performance is on YT prior to a Netflix live show (or at least I don't think they should).

Bingo. They try new material on the road, and each place, may tell a joke a little differently until it is perfected. They will use the perfected jokes for a television special.

It sounded like a personal dislike of RFK JR. RFK was big in the NY comedy scene for a long time because he was married to Cheryl from Curb. And by big I mean that I think he had significant interaction with the same social circles.
Vibe I got was that Mulaney and/or friends had personal interactions with RFK and was not a fan.

What's Mulaney's beef then? Politics? Or is RFK just another old guy he wants to die?

Saw him in Austin a few weeks ago, same show. Was also my first time seeing a big-time comedian. It's funny reading the comments about the young kid in the front row, because he had that in the show I saw as well. So that must've been a plant. The opener was the same chick who was god awful, just saying weird sexual stuff the entire time, which is the go-to for unfunny female comedians and just so tiresome at this point.
The RFK stuff was certainly something, wonder what his beef is there. That was probably the only part of the show that dragged for me. Him impersonating his in-laws and talking about the stupid dryer song were great. I didn't realize he was married to Olivia Munn, good for him.

I think it's a case of he just knows him personally and doesn't think much of him. Plus now Mulaney has two kids and this POS (in his opinion) with no medical background at all is making health decisions for his children. His previous job was keeping the Hudson River clean. "A river who's native fish is the used condom". Plus, not sure if he mentioned it in Austin but Mulaney said RFK jr would only hang out with rich liberal people in NYC, so him hobnobbing with the right all of the sudden seems disingenuous. But that's politics, through and through. The only people that truly care about right vs left are the voters.
He also mentioned he has conservative friends who can't stand him either. He could have gone hard on Trump but only played around with the age ting. RFK jr......seemed a little personal.

And Mulaney doesn't hang out with only the rich liberal people in NYC? He's fricking one of them.

I think you missed the point:
him hobnobbing with the right all of the sudden seems disingenuous

Only to someone who is ideologically captured, inflexible, and not serious about solving issues that transcend political division.
