I was in the mood to watch a war movie yesterday afternoon and came up with the Rotten Tomatoes list through google.

I'm listing some within the first 50 that drew my attention. There are a number of surprising omissions.

100 Best War Movies

1. Casablanca. Agree 100% on this one.

… 2 & 3 – never heard of

4. Dunkirk. Great movie, but don’t know I’d rate it this high.

7. Dr. Strangelove. Can’t argue with this one.

8. The Hurt Locker. Again, much higher than I’d rank it.

9. Lawrence of Arabia. Great movie.

10. Apocalypse Now. About right.

11. To Be or Not to Be. Great Jack Benny comedy, how do you rank this above some other great war flicks.

19. Zero Dark Thirty

21. Schindler’s List

24. Das Boot

25. Stalag 17

26. The Bridge on the River Kwai

28. Full Metal Jacket

34. Patton

38. Saving Private Ryan. I would rank it much higher.

41. Twelve O’Clock High

45. The Great Escape. One of my favorites

46. Letters from Iwo Jima. Would rank much higher

49. Zulu

I watched Midway for the 1st time this weekend, and I think it should be somewhere in there. I really enjoyed it. Then again, I'm extremely enamored with pre-jet dogfights because of the advantages and disadvantages of each country's fighter planes.

The first 25 minutes of Saving Private Ryan makes it #1 IMO

Maybe it is a generational reason as to why this movie ranks highly. I really dislike how this movie depicts war.

how so?
the film was made in 1957...12 years after the war ended. 2008 was twelve years ago from now

it was basically contemporaneous

Man there's lots of movies on that list that should be waaaaay behind Ryan.

I don't understand that shite at all.

Also, Casablanca coming in at number one is horseshite. First of all, the movie really isn't that great and secondly, it's not a "war movie" in the classic sense.

Casablanca as the #1 war movie is a bit like The English Patient or Gone With The Wind as the #1 war movie.

I mean, yea, there’s a war in it.

Dunkirk wasn't that good.

Fury at #86 is way too low.

Midway

Midway was so bad. They barely even covered the Japanese strategy or why the battle was so significant. A few maps would have helped. Also, homeboy's accent was hard to listen to and then he just would not shut up.

List is not really good.

I'm a Nolan fan, relatively speaking, and I can say, conclusively, Dunkirk at #4 is 100% recency bias. Does it deserve to be on the list of 100? Probably. Better than the other 96 films on the list? Not hardly. Probably in the #30s or #40s, at best.

I mean, Patton at #34 might be too low if we were talking about ALL films, much less war films. Thing was nominated for more than 10 Oscars, winning 7 and did not have a female speaking role.

IF Casablanca is a war film (it is not - it is a romance-noir with war as a distant backdrop), then I'm fine with it at #1. I wouldn't argue it being #1 GOAT film of all time - probably is.

List goes to hell immediately after #1

The Hurt Locker above Lawrence? Please.

Also Zulu way too low.

Letters and Das Boot should be on the Top 10.

And Waterloo is an amazing film with real life logistical battle scenes you will never see again because of CGI.

Lawrence is #1. The entire movie is military strategy, war action, guerilla warfare, planning, adapting, military leaders using people as pawns.

So I'd at least have Lawrence, Das Boot, Zulu, Waterloo, Dr. Strangelove, Letters, Come and See, among others in the Top 10.

Even taking into account the foreign films which skews the list, it is still horrible.

B/c POWs didn't joyfully whistle as they marched to the construction of the Burma railway. The depiction of the lead British POW as a collaborator is laughable.

Would have won BP if not for a little film named Lord of the Rings...

As with most lists thrown together...yuck.

It does look like they are trying to serve too many needs here. I would think that The Hurt Locker and Dunkirk being that high is about it's focus on the effects and emotions of war, which they do pretty well (I still wouldn't put it that high).

SPR is probably where it should be as outside of the first 25 mins., it's an unremarkable film.

I mean Lawrence should be #1 on any war film list, so that's a problem.

Ok...maybe I'm way off base here, but I don't see how Tora!Tora!Tora! isn't in the top 100. Please tell me it was on there and I just scrolled past it.
