I didn't have HBO when it aired, and somehow I never went back and watched it. Until now...

Wow, what a great show so far. I casually wandered over to it on Prime, and just meant to have something on in the background while I ate a sandwich. Ended up watching the first 6 episodes, up to where Marc Antony decides to go to Greece. Man, the production costs on this must have been insane!

Without spoiling the show (I know my history, that's not the issue)....

I read that they originally had 4 seasons written out, and found out midway through season 2 it would be cancelled. So they condensed and shoved what they could into the rest of the season.
Does this end up detracting from the watch? So far, season 1 has been superb, very tight. It's also been locked down into basically a few months. Season 2 sounds like it stretches over a few decades.

Great series even though they cut it short. It was GOT before there was a GOT.

Still pissed that HBO screwed up GOT.

I loved it, but I feel like I have to tell you -

...this rushes the ending and it is polarizing to say the least.

And, the lessons learned from this show provided valuable lessons to HBO which made GoT possible (and they fricked up the ending, there, on a full run, so maybe it was all for naught).

Everybody talks about how season two was rushed, but they still pulled it off 10 times better than season eight of GOT.

2nd season is extraordinarily rushed, kind of annoying especially for someone who knows history.

They didn’t have a choice though so I’m glad they at least tried to end it and not just have the show end unfinished.

Sucks because the pacing of the first season was perfect

Rome and Carnivale only going two seasons are two of HBO's greatest sins.

It seems like shows would be better just finishing out the season like normal then hope someone else picks it up. Why rush an ending and ruin it when you have a chance to pick it up later on? Seems like I remember a couple of shows getting canceled then picked up elsewhere.

Well, I guess the production costs and standards played into that.

Who's going to pick up a show too expensive for HBO, over a decade ago?
I remember SyFy grabbing up Stargate SG-1 when Showtime dropped it, but that was nowhere near as epic in scale.

They cut the series short. What a pity

Obviously a lityle late with this much time that's passed but woulda been a good Netflix candidate had it happened more recently.

Watched the Ottoman and now Marco Polo and must have cost a fortune to produce both although I don't think they spend as much when it comes to on air talent.

Getting picked up by another network wasn’t really a big thing back then, and honestly it still doesn’t happen that often

Getting picked up by another network didn't happen that much in those days, plus it was a very adult-oriented show that wouldn't have worked on any other network in those days. HBO was at the tip of the spear in the early-00s when it came to adult-themed television. Who else could have carried the mantle of Rome forward?
