Since the turn of the century, we’ve giggled at the poignant and the perverse, rom-coms and raunch-coms, new-and-improved takes on singular comic types and loose, highly improvised ensemble pieces that spread the spotlight around. Some of these movies have been gently witty, while others have displayed all of the subtlety of a dose of Sex Panther cologne. But they’ve all consistently cracked us up, in a two-decade-plus span in which — let’s be honest — we’ve need a laugh or two. Or three. Or a dozen.

After a number of heated arguments and lots of name-calling and the occasional chaotic pie fight, we’ve narrowed down our choices for the greatest comedies of the 21st century. Culling this down was a tough call; humor is a seriously subjective topic, and every one of our 19 writers weighing in had their own idea of what constitutes “hilarious.” But this list represents the best cross section of screen comedy of our millennium, a collection that runs the gamut from droll to bladder-loosening.

Rolling Stones couldn’t rank its way out of a wet paper bag.

Honestly have no problem with this being ranked #1.

Wow, that's bad. 59. The Other Guys 58. Fantastic Mr. Fox. Those both deserve a much lower ranking. And American Psycho on the list?

Oh this is going to be garbage just like all their lists. Let me go through:

1) Bros being three spots higher than Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

2) Just no to Thor Ragnarok. It’s just a fun movie more than anything, but not sidesplittingly hilarious.

3) Popstar and the World’s End should be higher than 55 and 51 respectively. Both Top 25.

4) If a Jackass movie were to make the list, go with #2.

5) Sideways at #46? Sideways shouldn’t make the fricking list at all.

6) Hot Fuzz at #33? Hot Fuzz is Top 10 for sure if not Top 5. It has the greatest final act in comedic history and you just don’t stop laughing once you find out about who is behind the murders. Then you’ve got Team America and Superbad which are also Top 10s right next to it.

7) Save for Borat and Grand Budapest Hotel, the 20s is an abomination of a list.

8) Toni Erdmann at #8? GTFO

9) Bridesmaids at #3? GTFO

Honestly it’s not as horrible as I thought it was going to be. Notable ones that didn’t make the list:

MacGruber
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil
Old School
21 and 22 Jump Street
Jojo Rabbit
Zombieland
We’re the Millers
Zoolander
Dodgeball

Yeah, it seems like they're really trying to make some of these dark comedies when I don't think most people would.

Looking at just the top 10 and not clicking the link, they picked 4 excellent comedies and only one is an obvious choice (40 Year Old Virgin). Best in Show, Step Brothers, and Walk Hard are all awesome.

Not at all familiar with In the Loop or Toni Erdmann.

Bridesmaids is good but way too high. Punch Drunk Love is a terrible pick though.

And to top it off, they have it in the top 10. It's been years since I sat through it, but I don't remember it even being slightly funny. Much less top 10...even in this unbelievably shitty century for comedy films.

Best in Show is fantastic. I’m surprised someone didn’t make a movie off of it before because the dog show industry is just about as ripe of a fruit as you could ask for when it comes to a comedy.

Favorite Best in Show scene...

"If she doesn't have her Busy Bee, she's gonna flip out!"

Dogs chill as ice while the owners flip out. Love Parker Posey.

Did they get Punch Drunk Love confused with Anger Management? That's the only explanation I can think of for labeling that movie a comedy, much less a top 10.

But it's Rolling Stone. I'm guessing they have zero subscribers these days and they only exist to put out these intentionally awful lists to get hate clicks.

Death of Stalin is one of the better movies I’ve seen in the past 10 years.

And I like Bridesmaids but #3 is high.

Tropic Thunder is way too low. Probably a top2-3 pick for me.

How did the movies with staying power not make the list? ESPN literally does run "The Ocho" every year. The other three I bolded are still being run fairly frequently and have phrases/jokes that are still used in casual conversation.

Keep in mind the others (save for Jojo) are all Hard R rated, so they’re not being syndicated. Syndication is not a sign of a good comedy. There’s no way they could play Team America on cable without it being completely butchered.

Like whenever Blazing Saddles has been broadcast on cable, it’s actually shorter with commercials than the theatrical release and makes no fricking sense due to never directly bringing up racism and editing it out. No, that’s not sign of a good comedy at all.

A music magazine that hated Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, and Black Sabbath's first albums, all of which are undisputed classics.
