re: Roger Ebert: At his best, Nicolas Cage is on the level of De Niro, Pacino and Nicholson

I was hoping no one would post a reminder of that ugly spectacle. Community Seasons 5 and 6 sucked balls.
No sir, Community Season 4 "sucked".
5 & 6 were not 1-3 level, but funny.
On topic, Cage should have won an academy award for The Weatherman.

Adaptation is such an underrated film. It has so many layers. I think Nick Cage is at his best when he's playing a neurotic mess.. Matchstick Men, Adaptation

You, like many others, but not all, have that exactly backwards.

This board also loves Cage becuase Sean Penn doesn't.
Penn said Cage couldn't act.

My favorite Cage movie. Him and Rockwell are very underrated.

Yeah when he is having a nervous breakdown he seems to shine.
He's actually really great in "The Family Man."
I mean, it's basically a remake of It's A Wonderful Life...and he's not as great as Stewart.
But it's one of his best performances.

His 2 best performances are Peggy Sue got married and raising Arizona. Las Vegas is 3rd.

That's rich from Penn, who tries to turn every role into a faux tough guy.

Lets not gloss over that Cage would star in Sharknado 6 if it paid enough. his resume is severely watered down by a ton of unwatchable bullshite

I will always find it comical how bad his accent was in Con Air.

If Nic Cage read the OT and had never gotten married, he would have at least 2 Oscars and be considered a top 3-5 leading man. All those divorce settlements forced him into a shitload of paycheck movies that hurt his ability to be an A-lister.
At least he has a reason for his star fading. Poor Jim Carrey was on top of the world from Truman Show and Man on the Moon through Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Thought he was going to complete the Robin Williams transformation from manic comedian to accomplished dramatic actor, then the Hollywood crazy took root and he was never the same.

When did this phase go away? I've lost count of the direct to video junk starring Cage that I've seen pop up on the various streaming services.

Cage is one of those actors whose work I have a hard time judging. If I think about it too much, I tend to watch his stuff contemplating how he's acting it instead of just enjoying the performance. I'm like that with Jon Hamm too. I enjoyed most of his stuff on Mad Men but there were a couple instances where I just couldn't get the picture of an actor just reading lines out of my mind.

My favorite Nic Cage DVD cover when he was a huge star in the late 90s.
Also starring
1 second of screen time is also starring?

He's like Sam Elliot. He was born looking 40.

I loved Con Air, but that was the worst redneck/southern accent I have ever heard.

"At his best" just wasn't very often, a lot was due to movie choices
Bad financial decisions left him in a position where he had to take the highest-paying roles available, even though the movie was likely going to be terrible.

Nicolas Cage is like a good director litmus test.
Thanks!
Cage will always give you 100% effort and throw himself into the role with reckless abandon. I love his commitment. the problem is, when he's in a bad movie, that kind of over the top immersion into the role really reveals how terrible the source material is.
Cage never mails it in... even when he should. Sure, he took paycheck roles, but he treated them like parts in a Scorcese film.
