Preferences may have something to do with the era you grew up in. If your a late 70's, early 80's "coming of ager" I or II may be your favorite. I came of age in the mid to late 80's, so III was right in there. IV and beyond were past my time.

I'm a 1979 baby, and 4 is by far my favorite.

Honestly, one reason I rank III so low is the whole Thunderlips angle.

Me too. I saw 4 in the theater. Everyone started clapping at the end of the movie.

It was such a horribly stupid and unnecessary plot line, and was basically only there to try to put someone famous in the movie. And it took away from an otherwise good movie about Rocky losing and bouncing back to defeat the seemingly undefeatable Lang.

Hard to argue against the evidence for Rocky I but I still like III the best.

I think for me it's that Rocky was less about being a cartoon boxing movie and much more a drama about a guy who happens to be a boxer. The boxing scenes were incidental.

Rocky II had essentially no point in being made other than for Rocky to win. Overall, it was pretty crappy. They took what made the first movie incredible (that this guy gave everything, lost, and couldn't have been happier about it) and went the conventional route and made the hero win. As great as the first movie was...it would have been less so had they ended I like they ended II.

Rocky III is when the series became ridiculous. With out a doubt I loved them, but they were no longer about this down and out dumb boxer who got his shot and made the most of it. By Rocky III Sly is in full Rambo mode and despite the fact that he was a washed up boxer in the first movie, he's suddenly ripped and in the greatest shape of his life. How? Who the frick knows...it's not like Mickey was going to get him into that kind of shape. Oh...and he's a lot smarter. And Adrian is no longer remotely a wallflower.

Rocky IV takes all that, amps it all up, and ALSO makes it a Cold War movie.

Honestly...the only character that remained the same (other than Micky who mercifully died in Rocky III early) was Paulie, who was the same opportunistic, sullen, drunken a-hole from movie one on.

Rocky is really a masterpiece and is in my Top 5 movies of the 1970's...and that's a decade of fantastic movies. The rest are fun popcorn flicks that resemble the first in name only.

FTR, I was 6 when Rocky came out, and my awesome older sister brought me to see it. I remember coming to school afterwards in first grade talking about the "cut me, Mick" scene. So I was right in that perfect wheelhouse for the rest up until IV which came out when I was a sophomore in high school.

Nope. First Rocky is still the best. It's a serious drama.

I agree, somewhat.

Firstly, I agree- Rocky III is hands down the best of the series.

But I is a classic, II is better that the first, and IV is cool in an 80's/cheesy sort of way.

One ended the Cold War. One made it ok to by gay on a beach.

The one you choose determines if you're a homo or not.

I'm born 1979 too. IV is a fun movie but it doesn't have the emotional weight & resonance as the first one does.

I love the fact that I just re-watched the entire series with my 10 year old son, and though he loved them all, his favorite was the first. I really thought he would go for 3&4.

It was funny that they had a dress-up day at his summer program and he wanted to dress up like Rocky. I was trying to figure out where to get him some boxing trunks and gloves, but he comes out of his room dressed as "street Rocky" with jeans, leather jacket, dark fedora, and bouncing a little bouncy ball. My thoughts: no one is going to know who you're dressed as, but you look bad-arse and you actually get the core of this movie.

I don't want to cheapen the word "awesome" by overusing it - but your kid is creeping up on it as we speak.

You could say II, III or IV is the best of the series and I wouldn't argue with any of them.

I liked V, but it's certainly not in the same class as the previous 4.

I agree but think II is close.

II is a reasonable argument because you still have the roots of poverty and street life shown and the rise up, which is quintessential to the Rocky story.

Rocky won best picture but it has not aged well and I can't get past Rocky and Adrien played as functional retards

How that movie beat Network, all the president's men and taxi driver for best picture is a mystery to me

My case for III:
Clubber Lang is Mike Tyson before Tyson existed

Clubber Lang is one of the all time greatest movie villains ever

Rocky is a nobody, who became the biggest athlete in the world but still had the insecurity of a nobody in his heart

When he and Adrienne have it out and Rocky says he is scared you believe it because Clubber is the personification of the white man fear of the black man

Mickey died tragically and it was crushing to fans of the series

The training sequence was dumb but the concept of Rocky needing to be more black to beat a black guy was pretty intriguing

Then Rocky's use of Ali's "rope a dope" strategy to beat Clubber was great

On Thunderlips:
That was an homage to Ali's "fight" in Japan with the Japanese wrestler Inoki
LINK

I liked the training homage in IV but the Russian character and his wife were a joke
