Everybody knows The Godfather and Apocalypse Now and Lonesome Dove, but one of my favorite Robert Duvall performances is in a fairly predictable Clint Eastwood western called Joe Kidd. Duvall plays the main villain, a big rancher who is stealing land from Mexican farmers.

It's a role Duvall could easily have phoned in, barking orders to his henchmen and sneering every once in a while. But Duvall does something special, giving the character an extra dimension by playing him like a Southern good ole boy, dripping condescension with every remark. His delivery of lines like "If he wuddn't I doubt we'd be talkin'" and "You got to thinkin' 'bout the money, didja?" enhance the character, as he treats everyone like a hired hand -- or worse, as a stupid child he shouldn't even be wasting his time with.

FWIW, I actually think Duvall's performance in Joe Kidd is better than the one he gave in that same year's The Godfather. IMHO it's one of the great villains in movie history and should be much better known.

Augustus McCrae is a top 3 character of all time. May be THE greatest.

RIP to a true American legend. They don’t make em like him anymore.

I loved Lonesome Dove so much I named my dog Gus

As long as he’s not constantly bugging you to cut the cards for a “poke” I’m sure he’s a fine companion

I don’t do Facebook, but my wife has an account. His wife posted from his account about his passing and the outpouring of love and respect for him had me in tears. So many accounts from people having named their sons Augie, McCrae, or Augustus after that character.

The Apostle was his masterpiece performance in a very lengthy list of Duvall's masterful performances. IMO

Nichson had the whole machine behind him and it was one of The most stacked years in history, but Duval blows everyone away in the Apostle. He just didn't have the PR campaign that JL Brooks and Jack did.

The Apostle is mentioned several times in this thread as one of his best performances.

For those that don’t know, The Apostle was his passion project. He wrote and directed the movie. Also, it was filmed in Louisiana. Most scenes took place in and around Lafayette.

In years back I was at an outdoor festival with my daughter who was six. I had to go to the bathroom and told her to stay here, by the fire dept display

When I got back she was gone and I started a pre panic search. A few minutes later the emcee on the stage called out my name and said Robert Duval found a crying little girl. who had lost her daddy. He took her to the stage and waited until I came to get her.

I thanked him and we shook hands. Daughter said a clown walked by and she followed to see if there was a circus.

The original Frank Burns, Ned Pepper in the original True Grit, THX 1138 (sci fi from 1971), the reporter in The Natural, the dad in Sling Blade and all those movies already mentioned. Best role is The Great Santini for me but he was brilliant in everything.

A really good movie that Duvall stars in, and practically no one talks about, is the 1972 film "Tomorrow".

If you like Duvall check it out.

Also, I like the old dark western movie "Lawman" starring Burt Lancaster and Duvall has a role in it.

Although it's rarely mentioned as a career highlight, I was pleasantly surprised to catch him in a 1967 episode of Time Tunnel:

He also had a cameo in Belizaire the Cajun, filmed in Lafayette and St. Martin parishes.
