Stuart Margolin, best known for his Emmy-winning role on “The Rockford Files,” died Monday at 82 of natural causes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Margolin, one of the busiest character actors of his era, appeared in episodes of “Love, American Style,” “The Partridge Family” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

The actor got the role of his career as Evelyn “Angel” Martin on “The Rockford Files.” Angel would help private investigator Jim Rockford, played by James Garner, by attaining information for cases while sometimes getting Rockford in hot water.

Margolin won Emmys in 1979 and 1980 for his work on the popular NBC show.

The Rockford Files episodes that had Angel were the best.

His character was something else. His endless con schemes still crack me up.

Rest in peace, Angel.

S.O.B. is one of Blake Edwards' most underrated films, and Margolin has one of many of the films' many amazing performances.

I first remember Margolin as part of the comedy troupe that did the vingnettes on "Love American Style".

And my singular favorite episode of MASH is his Dr. Robbins on the search for the barracuda. So many great lines. He walks by Radar and says, "I can save that face". Margaret cracks him with a yardstick to try to stop an assault and he says, "I knew I could count on you!" - all delivered with his Margolin smirk.

Just his appearance on a screen would make me laugh. RIP

That’s where James Garner discovered him. He had a role for a weasley character and he saw that Margolin could get laughs out of even the lamest Love American Style gags.

I am surprised S.O.B. never got an elevated level of esteem in retrospect.

Stuart Margolin on the Gilbert Gottfried podcast

It's a bit disappointing in that he doesn't go into detail on Rockford (aside from saying Garner was a nice guy).

This interview was the first I learned of SM's involvement in the L.A. music scene of the late '60s. Presumably that would explain his presence at Monterey.

I refuse to watch an episode of Rockford if Angel is not in it.

He also played Aimes Jainchill, the Arizona landowner/developer who took Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) to a shooting range (and gave him a gun as a thank you present) in the original Death Wish.

I love Angel as much as anyone but there are plenty of great non-Angel episodes:

Queen of Peru
Quickie Nirvana
Beamer's Last Case
Aaron Ironwood School Of Success
The No Cut Contract
The one w/Larry Linville -- the plot twist in this is a classic
The Lance Whites --the second one w/Lance AND Beamer is my favorite episode of any detective series, ever

Lance instructing Beamer to announce "Put'em up" before hitting anyone still makes me laugh.

Death Wish
Was one of a mafia Don's henchmen in another Charles Bronson film, The Stone Killer (1973), a year earlier. This pic is from a funeral scene. He pulls off a tough guy better than you might think.
