“Heartbreak Ridge” for me.

Despite being a Clint Eastwood film, over the years, it impresses me more and more as to how god-awful it really is. The script, dialogue and acting are almost satirical.

Yet, it still holds a place in my heart. It’s like a trainwreck, I just can’t look away .

Fun fact: the original story was supposed to be about a platoon of Army Rangers. The US Army objected to so much of the script, they ultimately refused to have anything to do with it. Thus, Clint successfully shopped it (albeit with reservations on their part) to the USMC.

That’s My Boy and Little Nicky.

You either like Adam Sandler’s bad movies or you don’t.

Pretty much any slasher movie from the 80s. Tubi has damn near all of them.

First - I can definitely smell what you're cooking, but there must be a little tapping of the brakes.

Really bad

Is it? I mean, it's not a great movie if you consider all the components. However is it bad? Yes. Corny, hokey, dated even for its time. But it delivers in entertainment. "Really bad" for me is reserved for shite like Gigli, The Marvels or (so-called) Star Trek (2009), you know, irredeemably bad.

Let's roll back to your category though:

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
(Heartbreak Ridge)
Night of the Comet

That would be a good 80s starting point for me. These films' delivery and execution are just wholly disproportionate to the underlying quality of the script - I guess is the best way to describe it.

Middle of the lineup hitter on a bad team takes a bum wrist to the plate in September and crushes a 3-run homer.

The issue here is that this vibe was intentional on the part of the filmmakers (on my own list, Buckaroo Banzai might be in the same category, so I'll allow it).

ETA: The films that drift to the top of this category are the ones we usually call "cult classics" - although not all cult classics should be considered "guilty pleasures"

And another one to consider: Rocky Horror

Hence, my point. In spite of its many flaws, it still remains a guilty pleasure of mine.

I think it’s a passage of time thing. I remember 20 year old me going to the theater to see it with my Dad in 1986 and thinking it was great. Then, as I got older and matured, my tastes became a little more refined…as do most people’s.

One thing is definite: Clint Eastwood, over the decades, has gone light years as a filmmaker from where he was when he made this one.

Not even close to being a bad movie, much less really bad.
It’s an awesome movie.

I wouldn’t call it really bad but the dialogue is crazy stupid and some of the acting is really bad but I nominate Battleship. I still watch it every time I come across it.

Has an awful RT score, but I don't believe that it is a bad movie.

Meh. Clint directed The Outlaw Josey Wales 10 years before Heartbreak Ridge and it is one of the greatest movies of all time (IMHO).

So, it wasn't experience. He had already directed Play Misty for Me and High Plains drifter before Josey Wales.

He did trend upward, though (with Josey Wales being head and shoulders above his early work). Bird was just a couple of years after Heartbreak Ridge and Unforgiven (maybe his best film as a director, although I do have a soft spot still for Josey Wales) was just 6 years after.

Clint made a ton of movies. Some didn't turn out great. As a director and leading man combo, there are few peers for him. That short list includes Buster Keaton (who thought Chaplin was the greatest actor/director of all, FWIW), Chaplin, Orson and then there is nobody like that, really, until Clint.
