I've listened to a few Wheaton narrated books and he does solid work. One of my favorite narrators.

After reading this thread, decided to pick up this book. This was a good read and this trailer with it's weird race shite kinda pisses me off. Can't believe I missed this book before now. Why would they change the plot that much for the race???
It's clear Parzival is the Dolorean without the reddit grab. He owned one in the book. Guess Aech is in the bigfoot and I would of thought Shoto got the Akira motorcycle, but apparently that is Art3mis.
Art3mis looks super skinny in the trailer. That's kinda a big thing against what the book was going for with her and her issues. Would of expected Wade to be bigger IRL too.

Wade lost weight halfway through the book, but yeah everything about that trailer screams it's a "reimagining based on book" type thing. A la Borne Identity.

Yeah, I would've made the teaser a faux trailer for Oasis itself with a URL for Oasis promo site and not done a full reveal for a while.

Yeah, but we see him in the stacks in the trailer, should of been big there.

I actually almost bought this book the other day at B&N. Had no idea they were coming out with a movie. So as someone born in 1982, is this a book I need to read?

Yes. It's fantastic.

It's a really fun read the first and second time. All the references are great and put in in creative ways.
It's certainly not great literature, and the main character becomes more unlikable the more times you read the book (at least to me). But that doesn't change how much fun I had listening to it.
I'm excited for the movie. I imagine the Japanese brothers are going to be left out, which is fine by me. I just hope they keep the DnD section and the Zork section.

I'll be honest, the trailer doesn't match up at all with how the book felt. We'll see. I was thinking the visuals would have more of an '80s feel.

I'm on my second read through but I don't mind Wade at all. Yeah he has that middle part of the book where he bought into himself a bit, but they all kind of did. As someone who grew up playing competitive online games, I completely understand the friends without really knowing someone dynamic. Hell, I'm on a group chat now with people I have only met once or twice in real life.

The Aech reveal can't be as big of a thing in the movie. He isn't a white male, he's a big ogre dude. Kinda blows up that whole thing.

They were hella militarized.
Out of Oasis their R&D was basically MOSSAD.
In Oasis they had fleets of warships, massive amounts of planet killers, and the Sixers were basically grunt infantry.
Plus their home page was a death star mixed with a war world and a replica of their HQ instead of a laser.

Good point, I guess I just imagined them a little different, like a NASA room when a space ship launched.

I'm nervous with all of the modern references in the trailer. What sucked me into the story is how this guy made everyone passionate about the 80's, 60 years after the fact. It made these people able to dedicate their lives to said time period. I'm seeing a lot of modern references in the trailer, specifically Halo and that is setting off alarm bells. I hope he doesn't screw this up.

Well, that looks fricking awesome.

I just watched the trailer he says he lives in Columbus while he's in the stacks

I have a serial down voter, I guess I irritated someone discussing the book.

Thats what I heard too, and from that I am making the assumption they cut out a lot of background non-oasis stuff.
