Saw it tonight, haven’t read the book

Fun, entertaining movie overall. Thought the first half or so was awesome but the last hour drug on in some spots and got kinda cheesy but I don’t think it ruined the movie. I normally don’t see the 3D versions but I saw this one in 3D and thought it was well worth it, didn’t feel like some cheap gimmick

I've read the book multiple times and love it. So take this review with that in mind.

Spoiler

Some of the changes were probably necessary for licensing reasons and I knew that going in. But I didn't like the complete editing of the hunt. In the movie, you aren't getting keys and clearing gates, just getting keys. So it takes out a lot of the challenges.

I was disappointed in the overall lack of knowledge from some of the characters concerning the 80s. Aech hasn't seen The Shining and is supposed to be a top Gunter?

Disappointed that I didn't see them play Monty Python or Ferris Buehler.

They didn't play a single old video game to win anything. That just seems unreal.

With that said, the world Spielberg built was incredible. Basically how I envisioned it when I read the book, but cooler. Some things about the world I would change or question, but they were minor and nitpicky.

The car chase was cool to watch, but I'm shocked no one saw how they won at first.

I was OK with some of the changes and wonder if it would have been better had I not read the book.

And maybe it's me, but the annoying part of the movie is it fails to include a bulk of the top ten things I loved from the book.

He did play Adventure, but it was one of the cringiest parts of the movie because of how dumbed down they made it because any gamer should know it was the first Easter egg.

Movie looks terrible. The book was great to a certain point.

You're right. I mixed up my Matthew Broderick movies. Borderline inexcusable.

And I almost when back to rephrase and add "win" a video game. Because he didn't really have to beat Adventure. It was also annoying that they have a slew of Halliday scholars and not one of them thinks about playing Adventure first.

So I haven’t seen it yet and I know I’m posting in a spoiler thread. I’ve read the book a few times so the story can’t really be spoiled for me.

I fully expect the movie to be different than the book. Getting rights to all the IP alone would be a feat probably harder than peace between N and S Korea. All I want from this is classic Spielberg with a story tailor made for him to tell. If I get that, I’ll be happy.

Not going to be able to see it this weekend, might try to go during the week. On vacation next weekend.

Loved it. The sheer amount of Easter eggs in nearly every scene was awesome, I lost count about 30 minutes into the movie and I enjoyed trying to find them the rest of the movie. I would highly recommend anyone to go see this movie

It was a pretty movie but man was I bored a few times in the movie. The writing seemed off as well.

Saw it last night. Enjoyed it for what it was. I knew not to expect it to be like the book so that helped. Was just a fun movie and would watch again.

Just got out. Absolute pure 80s and 90s nostalgia. This movie was absolutely fun!

It was obvious the cute girl at IOI was thinking outside the accepted box and would have picked Adventure but no one was listening to her. It was symbolic of the difference between corporate thinking vs the true enthusiasts.

Glad to see it's getting good recommendations here. A few friends of mine have enjoyed it as well, though none of them read the book. I'm little disappointed that it sounds like they cut out some of the mystery of the book, though. I did wonder how much of that would land with a broad audience, though. I'm actually hoping to see it Saturday night, but that's still not 100% certain.

My point was, more or less, playing Adventure shouldn't have been outside the box thinking.

Well said. I didn’t want to be that guy, but the book was better. I really enjoyed the movie though. I get the rights to certain things couldn’t be had and some editing would have to be done.

Spoilers!

What I didn’t like was Z not finding the first challenge at the school land. The theme was anyone could find the egg.

I didn’t like how Art3mis gave herself up and conceded Wade being the hero. She was going for it the entire time in the book. It added to the love interest. Her leaving Wade and him being heartbroken and doing stupid stuff in the meantime was lost as well.

Also, the challenges were kinda dumb down IMO. In the book, each challenge was three parts (finding the challenge, playing a game, then quoting a movie) here, it was a race or a movie or whatnot. And no one ever went to the Shining before?

I still enjoyed it, and I don’t usually like 3D, but it was good for this movie.

I saw it last night. The Shining scene was amazing. That alone made the movie awesome to me.

Here is my take.

The bad- Seems like they scrapped a lot of the better story elements for more action.

The good- It's just a fun movie that you can rewatch a few times. I took my 11 year old son, he is a gamer and he thought this was the best thing he's ever seen.

That Shining scene though

That's the thing I loved about this movie. It's filled with so much stuff from the 80s and 90s that it's hard to lose interest just off of the references alone.

Saw it yesterday. Did not read the book so I went in completely blind with no knowledge of the story. CGI, action scenes were amazing but some of the dialogue in the real world was kinda cheesy. Overall definitely entertaining and I would see it again for things I missed in the first go around

Yea, maybe I have missed some people's reviews, but how can anyone until you posted finally mention The Shining part?

That was probably one of the coolest effects I have seen in a movie.

I loved this movie. Very fun and I will probably go see it again.
