Or…
Because of his meddling they took the Ark to the secluded island instead of shipping it to Berlin as was their original plan.
And yes, without Marion’s medallion, they might not have found the well of souls.
The bigger question was how did Indy stay in a U-boat, undetected that most certainly would have submerged..

It wasn’t wartime, Raiders takes place in 1936.

Fair enough, but cut me some slack. I was posting before coffee.

Because of this thread, TIL that the external hull in Raiders was a seaworthy mock up that was also used for exterior shots in Das Boot (1981), which Stephen borrowed from that production.
Also the "historical" U-26 was a Type IA, whereas it is depicted as a Type VIIC in the film (the VIIC was the most common type during the war, but not commissioned until 1940).
The real U-26 was scuttled off the coast of Ireland after being damaged during an engagement with the Royal Navy.

So instead it gets opened in Berlin, Hitler and the entire Third Reich are destroyed before they ever get started.
Indy helped KEEP WWII going.
Damn, it's even worse!

They filmed a deleted scene where the submarine quickly submerges and Harrison Ford uses his bullwhip to lasso the periscope and then barely manages to hang on. Later we see the periscope approaching the U-boat base with Indy still clinging for dear life.
Lucas and Spielberg cut the scene because they thought it was too ridiculous in a movie that constantly pushed the edge of that envelope. Instead they figured it was better for the audience to assume the U-boat never bothered to submerge because they thought they were invincible anyway with the Ark on board, so Indy could have just chilled out solo on the top deck for the whole ride like a regular boat.

That makes zero sense. As Indy said later on, they didn’t even know what they had.
Remember, they were in such a hurry to get the Ark back to Berlin the plane was already prepped and ready to fly.

Even in wartime it would have ran on the surface. The “plothole” only comes up because we are now used to nuclear subs that might not surface for months.
Submarines of the era were surface ships. It’s why they had a deck gun and AA gun. They could submerge but it wasn’t for travel really, but getting into position in the last stages of the ambush or to sneak past a very tight spot
They could only go around 100 miles creeping along at 4 knots with full batteries.

I’ll throw this other mind blower at you then:
Early in the war torpedoes were reserved for only armed escorts and massive freighters.
Because of their limited stock of torpedoes they would do most of their sinking by deck gun.
As ASW dramatically improved it became suicide to stay on the surface so torpedo usage increased in hit and run tactics.
Towards the very end, ASW was so good that being surfaced was basically impossible so the last subs (and older refits) were set up with a snorkel and had the deck guns removed entirely, and cruises occurred at periscope depth.

also…submarines up until nuclear power were diesel powered and thus needed air. Submerging was on batteries and could not be maintained indefinitely
