Love the stories about him. One of the few guys that Kubrick ever trusted to improvise.

Kinda shocked he was only 74. RIP.
I thought he was close to 74 in FMJ

Not hard to see why, guy was as true a Devil Dog that ever donned the Wooly Pully
ETA: Always love Donofrio trying to keep a straight face in this scene

Coach Norton: By the way, did you boys take care of that bitch that was gonna marry Silverman?
Wayne: Uh, yeah. Yeah, we snuffed that broad just like ya said.
Coach Norton: Good. How'd ya do it?
Wayne: We, um...
J.D.: Ate her...
Coach Norton: You ate her?
Wayne: Yeah, we ate her.
J.D.: Alive.
Coach Norton: My hat goes off to you. You boys are smart; that's the perfect crime

"You are so ugly you could be a Modern Art masterpiece!" He had the best quotes.

Everyone remembers him for "Full Metal Jacket," but who here also remembers the Reverend Jimmy Lee Farnsworth on "Fletch Lives"?
DEMONS, OUT!

I don't think Kubrick had much of a choice -- there was no way he could write a better monologue than Ermey could improvise. Pretty much how he got the job, after all.

His service record and film credits are one thing, but this man managed to somehow go roughly 40 years without aging.
He looked exactly 58 years old from age 34 to 74.

A few people have mentioned what a great ad-lib job Ermey did in FMJ. It wasn't ad-lib. He was just reverting back to being a Drill Instructor.
I remember when FMJ came out and me and a buddy, who was ex-Navy, went to see it. I had no clue who R. Lee Ermey was. Never saw him before. Five minutes into the movie I broke out into a cold sweat, the hair was sticking up on the back of my neck. I was mesmerized. DAMN, I WAS BACK IN BOOT CAMP AGAIN! Anyway, I leaned over to my buddy and said that I don't know who this guy is, but I can tell you he is a real Drill Instructor, or was one at one time. NOBODY is that good of an actor! I had been through that 3 months of pure hell in 1971, so I had a damn good idea of what a Drill Instructor was. The first half of the movie is about as real as it gets, except for a few small technical details. For instance Pyle having live ammo. I then found out a few months later about Ermey's bio. Anyway, Semper FI Gunny. You will be welcomed to that big grinder in the sky.
