In 2001, a very short time after our 9/11 attack, Major Charles Ingram, an officer in the British Army, went on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. (The show originated in England, which I didn't know, but that fact is secondary to the story.) Ingram stumbled badly on the first few questions, and had to use 2 of his 3 lifelines, so it was thought he'd bow out quickly and leave with only meager winnings. However, Ingram "got on a roll" and answered 7 questions in a row to capture the show's top prize.

But, did Ingram cheat on his way to the prize? Quiz is a 3 part, roughly 3 hour, reenactment - documentary that takes on this question. IMO, the show is not slanted one way or the other. Both sides are fairly presented, and viewers are left to draw their own conclusions.

I checked out a DVD from the Baton Rouge Library, but I haven't looked at Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc, to find out if other platforms have the show as well.

If game shows and/or conspiracies interest you, you should like Quiz. There are certainly worse ways to spend 3 hours watching movies/documentaries/TV.

What is some of the proposed evidence for him having cheated?

Didn’t they make a movie about this with some Indian people dancing?

It is on Fubo, AMC, and Sling for free streaming.

BTW if you want to find where something is streaming use justwatch.com. You can add the channels you have to get what has been added new to each channel every day. I use it all the time to look up where something is streaming.

I remember watching an interesting documentary about a guy who "cheated" on Press Your Luck (the no whammies show).

I put cheated in quotation marks because the guy was basically an Aspergers case who watched the show religiously and figured out there was a pattern to how the squares rotated and if you pressed the button at a certain time you were guaranteed to win.

It was funny to see the 'oh sh*t moment' when the control room realized he had hacked their code and there was nothing they could do to stop him from racking up a small fortune.

The aftermath was also interesting, when he squandered his windfall in all sorts of bizarre ways, including buying a wall full of TVs and watching them all day in hopes he might discover another short-cut to riches.

Holy shite. I had not idea anyone used any of the new libraries BR is throwing up everywhere. Always figured it was just a money-laundering operation.

We used to use the ones in Birmingham a good bit when my daughter was younger. They have a great kids section, and planned activities for the kids down there. Plus we would check out a few DVDs and Blu-Rays to watch for free. Figure my taxes are going to it in some way, so might as well get some use out of them. Now that she's in middle school, not so much.

Is this the guy whose wife was coughing whenever the host read the correct answer?

From Wikipedia:

quote:

On 9 September 2001, Ingram became a contestant on the ITV game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, following his wife Diana and her brother Adrian Pollock, who had each won £32,000 as contestants on the show.[10][11] To prepare, Ingram practised for about twenty minutes per day on a homemade "Fastest Finger First" machine.[12] Ingram got into the "hot seat", but used two lifelines early, ending the day at £4,000 and with only the 50/50 lifeline remaining. The production team doubted he would proceed much further when filming resumed, but he surprised them and reached the jackpot of £1 million.[13]

By the time Ingram had left the set, the show's production company, Celador, began to receive allegations of irregularities occurring within the quiz and suspended the jackpot payout to investigate the matter. At the same time, the show's presenter, Chris Tarrant, overheard that the Ingrams had been arguing, despite Ingram's success, moments before Tarrant joined them in their dressing room for champagne; another member of the production team also noted a similar thought about the couple's behaviour.[14] While reviewing the recording, the production team made a connection between Ingram's answers and coughs coming from one of the waiting contestants, lecturer Tecwen Whittock; in another instance, the coughing came from Ingram's wife, while she was in the audience.[13] Based on this evidence, all three were accused of cheating, and the matter handed over to police to investigate further. Whittock and the Ingrams were eventually charged with "procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception".

That's the most "white collar" crime name I've ever heard.

Of course in the UK that could just mean taking a swig from someone's pint.

The plan is actually clever. They just got too greedy.

They should have played the first 4 rounds with the intention to not ever use the life lines, no matter what.

Starting with Round 5, use the cheat, but only on rounds 5, 7, 11, and 13 (prime numbers; a pattern not immediately obvious), and use the 3 life lines whenever he needed help on 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, and 15.

Surely, the dope should know at least 3 or 4 of the remaining questions if bothered to practice.

Also, not arguing in the dressing room when the host and producers visit with you after you have won the jackpot would help too.

Yeah there’s like a 20 minute reenactment on YouTube and it’s pretty clear they cheated. Save yourself the extra 2 and a half hours

It's funny when you watch the doc, and they isolate the coughing it is so obvious.

But I guess in the heat of the moment nobody really realized.

Every single question, he went through every single answer very slowly and pondered on it until he picked an answer that his smarter cohort in the audience knew and then that guy would cough...and sometimes, the Major would go over that answer again in his head and out loud and the coughing would become more boisterous.

They didn't have smart phones back then, so she was just a genius that knew every answer?

Plus he was stupid in announcing early on in the question what he thought the right answer was.

He'd go on and on and on about how he was sure it was answer A...

And then he'd hear a cough on answer D and say quickly, I'm gonna go with D without any explanation.

That was a good documentary. I don’t consider what he did cheating in any way. It was their own fault for making it easy enough for a human to remember the patterns.

I'm guessing the reason there was an argument in the dressing room was because his wife thought he had given away the game by being so obvious.
