Yeahhhh

The “oh I’m just a school teacher” shtick… that’s leaving out some pretty big qualifications as well

I get it, but for this to be an early success it needs to bring in a wide audience, not just us sci fi nerds. It IS sci fi, but not the nerdy/heady kind.

I dont ever mind when they do this kind of trailer, because the more people who watch - the more of these types of movies we will get.

I read this book in 2 days on the back of a catamaran in the Caribbean a few years back. Only got up to get another drink, take a leak, or reel in whatever was biting.

If you mean, the moment he found out exactly why he lost his memory when he first awoke, yeah that was a shocking and sad twist. And I'm surprised the story went that far to show his reluctance.

idk

We think that because we know what is in the gaps they don't show. If you haven't read it, it would be hard to piece any of that together IMO

Pretty much, but it is a book it would be really hard to sell to audiences without some spoilers. Hopefully my wife avoids trailers and I can just talk her into coming with me by telling her she'll like it without watching any.

I'm with you. Absent Rocky and the alien contact, this movie could look like an Interstellar clone - which of course it isn't.

It's a delicate balance to show what makes this story different from what you've seen before, but also not to give away so much of the fun that made the book what it was.

I understand why they had to do this with the trailer. It's a good balance, all things considered.

Spoilers:

That picture of Rocky and Grace looking at a skyline. Theyre not reversing the ending, I hope. Rocky needs to go home. Maybe thats just Grace showing something to Rocky on a screen in the ship? Even though Rocky can't really see in the traditional sense?

I thought Artemis was a sophomore slump by him in terms of storytelling and such. It wasn't horrible but wasn't great. 2.5/5.

I got my tickets for the early screening Monday March 16. You have to link your Fandango and Prime accounts to buy them. Activation Link

Normal tickets should also be available for showings starting March 19.

I've seen a couple of blurbs from celebrities who have seen the movie. Besides the predictable hyperbole, they seemed shocked by how emotionally moving the film was. Which leads me to believe that they got the book really right in this movie, or the celebs weren't familiar with the story and were expecting a basic sci-fi yarn.

I was kind of baffled by how much they showed in the first trailer, haven't watched any of the other ones since. I just don't get why you take away the surprise of Rocky. Maybe they thought the movie wouldn't look as interesting if they didn't show an alien? Either way, I'll hopefully be there opening night, looks fantastic.

The ‘ Ryan gosling space survival movie’ must not have tested as good as ‘Ryan gosling teams up with alien in space to save Earth’ trailer

It's a hugely popular book. The scifi nerds know about Rocky, you have to give the general public more if you want the general public to show up.

I get you loved the reveal of it in the book and wanted that for people who don't read sci fi, but they want this big budget movie to do well and they want to make sure the general public knows a bit more of what they are getting in this movie.

Rocky isn't some hidden plot twist he is an integral part to 85% of the story. That's like being pissed off that a trailer showed Gamora and Peter Quinn together. Someone who hasn't read the comics would have no idea those two teams up together to save the universe. Rocky is just a character the protagonist meets in the course of his journey.

The real plot twist from the book isn't hinted at and I'm curious of the story arch follows the same course and reveal. That's the true emotional center of the book.

Going into the book with the assumption that the author of The Martian is writing a similar factual science based book, and then suddenly realizing that it involves aliens... that's a huge surprise. And the fact that the book jacket mentions "science based" but not "aliens" tells you that it was meant to be a shocking revelation.

I know this wasn't directed to me but out of The Martian, PHM, and Artemis, Artemis was my least favorite by a long shot. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't nearly as gripping. Just simply a decent read.

Eh. He's integral obviously but I'd disagree with the hidden plot twist. Rocky is first seen in chapter 10 of a 29 chapter book. So a 1/3 of the ay through before you get him.

Either way, it's the decision they went with so it is what it is, if it brings in more people to the theatre I'm fine with it. But I say that as someone who was legitimately very surprised when he was revealed in the book so that was a big highlight for me so I'm personally glad I read it first.
