I agree - that was a little strange. To me, Molto was the most compelling part of the show and the character that I enjoyed watching the most.
SPOILER
They tried to use knowledge of the movie outcome against the viewer. There was quick shot of the movie murder weapon in the shop. They tried a head fake with Rusty saying that he knew the entire time vs. the movie version where he didn't figure it out until it was all over....but the same killer. Then the double twist where he didn't actually know what happened.

I liked this. A bit of a "life goes on despite everything" theme, instead of some gratuitous additional plot development. This was more realistic to me.

Season 2 should start with Rusty showing up for work on Monday.

I think it showed that he was just a lonely loser.

Well you know, a lot of people read the book and saw the movie. So twists and turns won’t mean much.
But we’re going to watch even though we know the ending.
My favorite post of the thread.

This show was boring. And the ending was awful.
The undoing was a thousand times better.
Also gyllenhall is a horrible actor.

Theory...
On the night she was killed, he visited her twice. We know this.
After he left the first time, he went home and his wife's car was gone because the daughter had taken it to follow him and eventually murder Carolyn. When he was home, he didn't go in his bedroom and potentially not even the house so he didn't know his wife was still home. He thought she was gone.
Then he visits Carolyn a second time and she's been murdered.
Puts it all together then.
I like this a lot. I’d been wondering why he was so sure about it as well, and I hadn’t thought about his wife’s car being gone because his daughter followed him. That is def the dot he connected and makes total sense.
I thought that was a hole or atleast a pretty big leap, but if your wife’s car is gone in the middle of the night when you find out that the woman you were having an affair with was ruthlessly murdered, I think that’s a very reasonable connection.

So how was the ending different from the book/movie?

I liked of the show but the ending was kinda silly. I mean why did he go back to Carolyn’s to discover her murdered? And also the daughter digging up the fire poker and breaking into Molto’s home to place it? Good show. Bad ending. Would have just preferred it be the wife.

Yeah I’ve listened to the ringer pod recap and they are book readers and love the movie and said they should have just stayed with the wife and tricked it up too much
The daughter was barely in the show and were supposed to believe she pulled this off flawlessly and hid the weapon
