or poorly acted (also unlikely, considering the overall strength of the rest of the cast).
I don't know. That actor was great in Generation Kill.

True Wire aficionados consider season 2 a masterpiece.
It’s the season that is most overlooked by fans and takes a couple rewatches to truly appreciate.

First watch of the series, season 2 was my favorite, as well. And that’s coming from somebody who doesn’t think too deep about what I’m watching, but just likes to be entertained.

That's what I'm saying - between the directors they used and the casting folks' performance, I would almost rule out the kid couldn't deliver. That's why I think, if the final product is flawed it is because they packed a little too much into the character. Pablo's Nick was just right - just the right balance. Ziggy just seemed like too much at times.
My best guess is that the otherwise stellar writing team just whiffed a little bit on Ziggy - not a lot, but in a show that good any minor flaw sort of stands out (ironic in a way).

Season 2 is my least favorite by far.

If you don't like Season 2 at least as much or better than Season 5, then I don't know what to tell you.

the entire series is fricking perfect. It's the best series ever on tv - it's a masterpiece.

Brother Mouzone is a horrible character and so out of place for the show
Not a hot take, easily the worst, most absurd, ridiculous character in the whole show. Ziggy's freaking duck was better written than Mouzone.
Ziggy sucks, sure, but you get why he sucks.
eta: the biggest gripe about S2 is Nick's atrocious acting

Ziggy brought comedic value until he killed the Armenians and fricked Frank everyone up
But no ne was not likeable at all

I thought Pablo did a great job with Nick.
(ETA: If anyone in the S2 cast seemed not quite up to snuff with the excellent regulars from S1 it was the ginger gal playing the shore cop, but even she grew in the role.)

He was good in the Tim Robbins/Jack Black cold war comedy, The Brink (almost Dr. Stranglove meets Archer meets The West Wing), and was essentially the third lead as the drug dealing naval aviator.
He's also good as the Leprechaun (Mad Sweeney) in American Gods.
And speaking of the Sobotkas, remember their Prius Super Bowl commercial?
LOL

He is also the brother of the actor who portrays Ray Donovan.

I legit wonder if people that say that Season 2 is their favorite actually believe the words that are coming out of their mouths, or are just trying to be hipster/contrarian.
Even if you were just comparing seasons 1 and 2, how in the world can you watch season 1 and then watch season 2, and tell me season 2 is better. It isn't. And it isn't close.

Who the hell has time to give the wire "a couple rewatches"?

That's fair. But I respectfully submit that there is a gaping chasm in the quality of seasons 1, 3, 4 and seasons 2 and 5.

I don't agree with Season 2 - it's just jarring. You have Bunk and Freamon working together to find the killer. You have the aborted hit on Omar. You have Vondas, The Greek and Boris - three of the best characters in the whole series with the bulk of their impactful work in Season 2. You have the Sobotkas, particularly Frank - one of the best tragedies in the entire series (maybe the best in dramatic television).
The dock story was just a jarring shift from the task force versus the Barksdale drug organization that was the focus of Season 1. Quality wise, better than 4 and 5, certainly and on par with 1 and 3 (I think superior even to 3, when it comes down to it).
As with all things like this - opinions vary.
