I saw a poster with Will Smith and with today's Hollywood, it took me a second to think "nah, there's no way"
He does already have the jug ears and bug eyes.

I guess it depends on when you saw it. If you first saw it when you were 5 like me then it's one of the greatest movies ever

They will never find more perfect actors to play those parts.
I mean did Shelley Duvall even have to audition or did they just beg her to play Olive Oyl?

Do kids today know who Popeye is?
This feels like main issue. The only people that know the character aren't nostalgic enough about it to be interested.
I would think most kids today don't know who Popeye is since cartoons have changed so much over the years.
I'm way old enough to remember Popeye and crew and tried a couple times to watch the Robin Williams/Shelly Duval movie version and just couldn't get past 1/2 hour of it before turning it off.
I know for sure I'd not be interested in another version of Popeye, especially with the way Hollywood is imposing their woke agenda in many movies today.

I would think the same, but Popeye still seems to get licensed for a lot of stuff.
There was a crummy video game that came out a few years ago, an animated film was in production before it was canceled, and I think there's still a ride at Universal in Orlando. Last time I was in Target, they even had a Popeye tshirt.
The Robin Williams film and many of the old cartoons are also available on free streaming services, so kids might be watching them with parents.
I'm totally spitballing reasons, but maybe there's more of a market out there than we realize.

I loved this movie as a child
Don’t know how they can make it any better but they always try
Next generation Popeye can’t wait to see the spin they put on it.

Apparently so as a trailer came out in 2016 that had 23 million views
Popeye
They had a death battle on YouTube two years ago with 7.9 million views between Saitama and Popeye.
Saitama vs. Popeye
You have a sort clip from the same fight four months ago that has 33 million views.

If Robin Williams can't get it right, nobody can. This is flushing money down the toilet.

Popeye is one of the most iconic cartoons in animation history.
Popeye has been around since the 30s and during WW2 was more popular than Mickey Mouse.

It was canceled not because no one knew who Popeye was but executives told animators that pretty much Popeye was too masculine and so they kept striping him down.
It wasn't enough and it was said that he would no longer be Popeye. So that was the end.

Bluto however, will be a strapping white male with extreme 'rapey' vibes.
So his character remains unchanged?
