I blame that on the Director. Rickman is one of several actors in the series who have never read the books.

This is legitimate and i never really thought about it until you said it

Raul Julia as M. Bison
The rest of the cast in that movie, however, goes on the worst list.

Michael Gambon and Ralph Fiennes never read the books either.
quote:
The choice not to read Rowling’s book series, he explains, is deliberate and he points out that costars Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman haven’t taken up the books either. “You’d get upset about all the scenes it’s missing from the book, wouldn‘t you?” Gambon said via phone from New York, where he was promoting the opening this Wednesday of the sixth “Potter” film. “No point in reading the books because you’re playing with [screenwriter] Steve Kloves’ words.”

that's fine and I dont think it effected their performances as much, but it took away from Rickman's Snape IMO, who in the earlier books seemed to despise HP. Dunno why they wouldn't want to read both to give themselves more reference. That reasoning given by Gambon is weak.
