That is all.
If you disagree with that assertion, you would be wrong.

It's under appreciated.
But it's not underrated.
People love that movie.

Is that the one with Kevin Costner where they spend a third of the movie crossing the same creek over and over again?

I enjoyed it but I wouldn't put it in the top tier of Duvall movies.
I think it suffers from the perception that Duvall was kind of overdoing the cowboy/trail boss role around that time. He was so great in Lonesome Dove. Then he made this one a few years later. Then he followed it up with Broken Trail with Thomas Haden Church.
I'm not saying the perception is a good one. The guy has such range. He's nailed roles from a mob lawyer to an aging fighter pilot to an evangelical preacher, to a down on his luck country singer, etc. etc. But I think the later cowboy roles could never live up to Gus McCray.
I think the movie may have also suffered from a bit of Costner fatigue.

The only redeeming thing about that movie is Robert Duval and some of the scenery. It was a very poor attemp to capitalize on nostalgia for Lomesome Dove and Unforgiven

The final shootout is great. The rest of the movie is too slooow. And Duvall was hamming it up a bit. I’d much rather rewatch Silverado - baby Costner was a badass, and every other role is filled by a legendary character actor.

It’s one of the better modern westerns we’ve had in awhile. I typically watch it whenever it’s on.

It's one of those movies that I watch every time it comes on.

I disagree because I've never seen anyone say anything bad about it on here ever. And anytime a recent western thread pops up, multiple people would put it in there.

I watch it about once a year. Its really good.

Eta: lonesome dove 1989. Open range 2003. 14 year difference yeah a few years later alright...jackass.

Didn't know this movie would be that divisive.
It's a Western.
It's Duvall.
That's like arguing that the cotton candy in your hand and the Merry-go-Round ride is not to your liking.

I actually think Duval at that age would have made a better Gus.
