You’re still early on. Just wait for season 4 with Glenn close. The quality explodes 10x. There won’t be any of the Julian stuff.

The Shield, The Wire, and The Sopranos all debuted around the same time, and all had similar length runs.
I was an huge fan of all three during the early 2000’s, but always enjoyed The Shield more than the other two at the time.
I’m not the only one, but somehow The Shield has been largely forgotten, while the Wire and Sopranos were elevated to television royalty.

The Shield is my favorite show, period. Season 5 is the greatest 11 hours of TV ever.

Holy shite. I just finished The Shield last night and never realized that Julian is played by the same guy that played Wilkinson in The Replacements, along with the Black Panther guy in Forrest Gump.

Also just realized Vic's daughter in the series is his real daughter. No wonder she looked just like him.
As for the series, waaayyyyyy better than I expected. The first two seasons are ok/decent but it changes course starting with Season 3.
I think the 5th season was my favorite with Kavanaugh because of the nonstop tension throughout, plus Kavanaugh was such a great antagonist.
The final season was so chaotic and ended with a bang. Only problem is I felt I needed to take notes to keep track of all the shite going on.

I think it holds up well and it there's not a bad season like a lot of shows.
Anthony Anderson still scares me because of S4. Even Glenn Close killed her role.

I'm doing a rewatch now - I can't remember if I was still watching in S4 originally or not, but Anthony Anderson is a BAD MAN.

The acting throughout was just outstanding.
The entire pilot (linked) is on YT right now, queued to the scene with the interrogation of a suspect named Lonnie (who was played by Canadian character actor Denis Forest - died just a few weeks later, this is probably his last significant work put to film):
