it's made up people and they don't bring race into it. i.e. an black dude is with a white woman, a white dude with an indian woman, or a white dude with a black chick as the central romances.
they aren't positioning it as "oh we're going to go against cultural norms by being in an interracial relationship!!!" they just don't bring up race at all. whites, blacks, indians, asians, are all rich, royalty, poor, and everything in between.
it's overrepresentation for sure, but no social messages. just regency soft core porn.

Madame Web”, a recent effort to launch a Spider Man movie franchise without Spider Man, performed even worse for Sony.
Sony is praying for a breakout character from the entirety of the Spider Man cast of characters in addition to Spidey. It hasn’t worked so far, mainly between a mix of poor character choices and shitty writing.
Venom kinda worked but not, as that character’s heyday came and went. And his arch-nemesis Carnage doesn’t lend himself to a PG 13 series.
Morbius? I haven’t even watched it but this screamed “bad idea” because if someone wanted to watch a Marvel based vampire film, they’d watch Blade instead. The character being corny as hell in the 1990s Spidey cartoon did not help due to broadcast standards. (Instead of drinking blood and killing people, he needed “plasma” which just weakened his victims instead. So you have footage of him whining “I need plasma…”)
Madame Web? Not a great character to begin with and honestly would need all the Spider-Woman offshoots to show up in a Spidey film first to be introduced just to stir interest.
The original Madame Web was basically a plot device in the 80s comics and 90s cartoon, not a character. The Julia Carpenter version of Spider-Woman got some play in the 80s and 90s but isn’t really remembered because the 70s version, Jessica Drew, made a comeback in the 2000s. Etc.
Trying to make a movie about interesting Spidey supporting characters tends to fail for the same reason that Jason Alexander and Michael Richards failed on TV after Seinfeld… The interesting quirky sidekick is worth attention but if you don’t have the main character serving as the heart of the show, it doesn’t work.

YOU MUST CONSUME NEW PRODUCTS
Physical media collections and media servers grabbing digital copies FTW.
The latter has become a big deal in part because some services started disappearing shows without warning because they didn’t want to pay royalties for them or had to hide them for X months before packaging them for a syndication deal.
Infinity Train fell afoul of the former and Westworld fell afoul of the latter, both on HBO Max.

The weirdest part though is that they know they are wrong, they just keep up the charade in some sideways bullshite way of doing "the right thing" or whatever. They can't take a step back and be honest about any of it. All they do is sit back and scream at normal people for being "___phobic" all while ignoring their true intentions for making shite like this in the first place
This is the result of DEI hiring: women.
Women will NOT admit being wrong, always someone/something else is to blame. They will make up a lie and look people straight in the eyes as they knowingly repeat the lie to avoid admitting mistakes or even simple accidents. Add to that the fiery cultural minorities (ones that don’t utilize self restraint or value self discipline) and it’s a simple recipe for disaster that many corporations are following not just Disney (being a media company just makes them the poster child for this crap).

We can disagree, but this is part of "wokeness," unless it's purely satire or irony. Seeing people in Antebellum or Victorian costumes is as ridiculous as seeing white people as part of a Maasai tribe. (unless it's Ace Ventura, then it's okay... see "Satire."
Cultural appropriation is a one-way street.

Deconstructing the old material entirely has its own problems, which is why The Last Jedi is divisive as hell since it not only did this but did it in the middle of a trilogy and derailed all plans for it.
This is a good point, as that was a white man who did it.
I think part of the issue is that when you focus on EXCESSIVE diversity is that you lose a LOT of experience. They're not bringing in young diversity to LEARN from the old guard, they're dumping the old guard and bringing in people based purely on demographics without an eye for experience.
I cannot imagine this working anywhere else where skills are needed. Imagine if you only hired programmers, or doctors, based PURELY on population demographics instead of experience - AND at the same time purging the very people who could train this younger guard.
Feel you need to hire more minority doctors? Great!
Ignoring better qualified applicants to do so? Not so great!
Pushing out older, experienced doctors to make room for inexperienced ones? Even less great!
Even if you weren't doing demographic hires - the idea that you can replace everyone with experience with young, inexperienced people is a recipe for disaster.
I've seen plenty of companies suddenly need to outsource their programming needs to the contractors made up of the same people they fired to save money by hiring new people.

Deconstruction has been a thing for years and some studios and actors intentionally passed on projects as a result.
The most infamous one in film has to be Airplane, which took the 70s “Airport” disaster series and lampooned the shite out of it, which made for a classic film but killed the ability to take any Airport film seriously after that.
IIRC, ZAZ tried to cast George Kennedy in it but he refused because of what it would mean for Airport. They did end up with him later on the Police Squad / Naked Gun series after Airport was dead.
The poor quality of some of the latter Airport films didn’t help but this killed them dead.

Sure, though that's a very different kind of "deconstruction". The "Scary Movie" franchise might have "deconstructed" Scream and other horror movies, but it didn't ruin them - and it was still its own movie. A better example would have been if Airplane! had been marketed as a specific sequel to Airport.

And that is the big problem.
It was a big budget SW movie and went out of its way to subvert every expectation of the genre, albeit still taking it somewhat seriously.
The problem was that you end up making a film pretty much unlike everything before it, jarringly so in a number of instances, and then pretend that you are still telling an overarching story that was the same one started in the previous film.
The quality of Johnson as a director really isn’t in question, given the Knives Out series. His judgment is a different story given that he was supposed to deliver the middle picture in a trilogy which continues the original story and takes it up a notch. Instead he pretty much did the trope “torch the franchise and run”, which means doing a bunch of shite to fundamentally change things then leaving someone else to pick up the mess.
And the bigger sin than doing it, IMHO, was that it was done badly and not entertaining.
People will bitch about bad story choices but let it slide a bit if still entertaining.
Having Leia Poppins suddenly fly through a vacuum or Luke toss his light saber into the ocean was not it.

The problem is Hollywood churning out stupid bullshite that only caters to an exceptionally small portion of the country, all while pretending that the masses are clamoring for it. They pretend that a-hole women playing superheroes or DEI/LGBT characters pretending to be normal and cool is what normal people want to watch and consume across platforms.
It's all about molding society into their liberal progressive image.
They know most people don't want their woke programming, but they are determined to persist even while losing money because it's all about brainwashing society. They can afford to lose money in these endeavors because they are bankrolled by big money liberals who are pulling the strings.

I’ve been watching Northern Exposure and it’s been so enjoyable. They’ve brought Trump (Just a business man in NY) up several times in a positive way. There are several conservative characters that aren’t demonized. It was a different time.

I'm watching more old westerns now because there is a difference between right and wrong and people are held accountable. There is usually a good message in the movie. I have no interest in a lot of new movies and shows and hate reality shows.

There’s also some psychology behind people watching old shows that their brain is familiar with instead of consuming new content that they have to give more of their attention to.
Partially true (human nature, comfort with familiarly).
However, there is a monumental quality gap AND no small elephant in the room. "Modern" Hollywood productions REQUIRES a large % of DEI / DIE in "New" Hollywood production staff, stars, and co-stars be chosen based NOT on what they bring to a show, a script, charisma but based solely on IDENTITY.
Current coercive DEI policies, insulting scripts and preachy messages are suicidal. They all but ensure all art creatively and quality will be compromised while snuffing the life out of the very spirit of the art, artists and viewers/patrons.
I'm rejecting 99% of the trash on principle alone.

But how will I know if a show is any good if it doesnt complete the DEI checklist???

I don't subscribe to any of these services... I have no idea what shows are on network TV and that has been for 30 years... I watch my fair share of Mayberry... Cheers.. Twilight Zone.. Seinfeld... and I pick and choose the Story Channel.. Any shows I watch are in syndication and those are few..

quote:Let's not forget that the standard network/cable model for a season used to be 26 or so episodes, either 30 mins or an hour (I guess 24 to 50 minutes really with commercials).
IMO it has less to do with “wokeism” and more to do with new shows having long periods between seasons (most people will fill that with older shows) and an oversaturation of shows that just aren’t very good or they’re good but often not allowed to fully develop/cancelled early.
That allowed the show to get settled in, and let you (the viewer) get familiar with the characters and their world. Every episode didn't have to be great, it just had to be THERE.
Most current streaming series are 6-10 episodes, and lucky to make 26-30 episodes in their entirety.
The difference becomes evident after awhile; Magnum PI. Everyone loved it, and honestly, there wasn't a ton of action. A few shootouts, some car chases, a couple helicopter scenes, and of course the beautiful scenery of Hawaii... but after awhile, we knew these characters like they were old friends or family members.
Sure, Magnum was ex-Navy (I suppose a SEAL, I don't know if they ever explicitly said that). But beyond that, we knew he was a Detroit Tigers fan, drank Old Dusseldorf in a longneck, used his flirty charm to get info from Maggie and the female DA, played football for Navy, and loved to torment Higgins. Beyond that we saw him playing basketball with TC and razzed him (in that episode we learned TC went to Grambling, which Magnum kept calling "Grumbling"). And so forth.
We ended up with more backstory on Higgins and TC than we do with the main protagonist nowadays. We got to know everyone.
That doesn't happen anymore, and so you don't feel a connection with characters, like you used to.
