Marty mentions to his boss that Rust's files from Texas are sealed so they don't know his full history
What files? Work history? Who doesn't know his full history? There is no way in hell the Louisiana State police are hiring a man with sealed files.

The former LSU pitcher is poor now because he had a "cerebral incident"
Do you think the family was well off prior to the illness?

Something I picked up on the rewatch. Rustin - "I always take detailed notes because there is always that smallest detail that breaks the case". Seems like they are talking to the Audience intentionally in the 2012 interviews.

Rust mentions a few times about "the kids we found" and "the kids we dug up" in relation to Fontenont
I caught something about "the kids we found" or "the kids in the woods" and thought I even heard something about a "hero story". I didn't catch that those kids were in some way relation to Fontenot. And I watched it twice. If he implied that Fontenot killed some kids, he would have had to do it an a fairly young age as I'm assuming the "cerebral event" happened sometime in college.

When they first get to the crime scene we see Cohle writing in his "tax man" journal. We later see that his drawing, not taking notes. I found that interesting.

well I mean a sketch of the crime scene is usually considered parts of Notes.

I would have liked for them to have shown the Fontenot family as at least middle class economically. If you're playing baseball at LSU you're chipping in for some of the cost. There are no full scholarships.
A kid coming from a dirt poor family, and they appeared to be dirt poor, may well opt for a signing bonus than ever stepping foot on a college campus.
Again, not an overt criticism of the show. Just an observation.

You've obviously never been around a stroke victim, even with great insurance the financial burdens are rough not to mention the emotional ones.

Did it look like this guy was receiving top notch medical care?
Even the Louisiana State pennant on the wall looked like it was from 1950.
Besides, it was made apparent they had been living there a while.

Yes yes they are
I find it hilarious that people think the quirky/troubled ace detective is some brand new entirely impossible character now.
You know considering it's a character that is as old as the cop drama is.

That would have been more realistic. MM's character talking about "these people" having no idea what's going on in the outside world seems to be the way they want to portray Louisianans.
That may not prove to be true. we'll have to see how it plays out.

Cotton is right this is Starsky and Hutch, Grisson and Brass, Horatio and Delko, Joe Friday and his various partners.

No one is saying its not a tried and true TV device. But its fair to say tried and true TV devices can sometimes be insulting to the viewer.

Or tropes can be used to fool you as well.

Someone please tell me how any reasonable person, and by reasonable I mean not more batshit insane than rust, could "have their intelligence insulted" by MM's awesome acting performance playing a very intelligent very disturbed very flawed character?
First we got he wasn't "human" enough. Then we got "well he would've never been hired" and now apparently he's so bad it's actually insulting peoples intelligence.
You fricks are absolutely insufferable.

First of all blow me.
Secondly, forgive me for forgetting how thin skinned the denizens of the movie board can be. Back to the poli board where differing opinion and debate is welcomed.
But mostly, blow me.

The way people are disecting this you would think we were discussing that shite show The Following and not one of the better premiers in the last 5 years.

If you are going to sit and pick out tropes how do you enjoy any work of fiction?

Ok, back on topic.
I'm gonna rewatch the first episode again, cause it was pretty damn good.

It's hilarious how this has gone down. Y'all are actively trying to pick apart his character for some fricking reason and you're failing at doing so.
Yet I'm the bad guy?
