The first movie is about Mike and his fear of death. The tall man was his manifestation of death.

It has a dream like feel to it like nightmare on elm street.

You either understand it and like it or you don't.

It had only a $300,000 budget that grossed 22 million which is pretty good for an independent film.

It is a solid movie considering the low budget and how the film crew had to improvise.

The actors were amateurs from the local area. Angus Scrimm as the tall man was the highlight of the movie.

The sequel came out as almost a decade later and the actor that played Mike was replaced with someone with more experience.

The dream like feel isn't included and is your typical action/horror movie.

Part three is good.

Part four is ok.

Part five suffers from a very low budget and the only positive was it explained who the tall man was and how he took over the world.

The plot is confusing because it feels like a dream and you don't know what is real or not.

The sequel made it clear in the beginning that it wasn't a dream.

The second movie wasn't as financially successful as the first movie because they waited too long on a sequel which other horror franchises had sequels in back to back years with no delays.

The third movie was only in theaters for two weeks in Missouri and Louisiana. It was doing well but for some reason it was pulled and went to video where it made a ton of money in rentals.

They are called sentinels in the sequels and the tall man has millions of them.

Some are the same size as a baseball and some are as large as a tall building.

Halloween 3--Season of the Witch

Just watched this one last week. It’s campy and the plot is absurd, but I love it as much now as ever. The original Halloween is obviously tGOAT, but 3 is low key one of the best and in my personal top 3 in the franchise.

I saw this one some years ago and don’t remember it to well. I see it recommended so often in these type of posts though, I’m making a point to revisit this year.

3 on its own is solid. The problem was it is a Halloween movie….but it’s not a Halloween movie. Had they called it something else it would’ve been much better received IMO. That mask scene scared the living shite out of me when I was younger. And the android angle is weird, but so is the rest of the movie so it sort of works.

As mentioned in the thread below, I watched Terrifier 2 tonight. I’d recommend skipping it unless you absolutely loved the first one. It’s pretty bad, fairly boring, and FAR too long (2:18). Definitely not my cup of tea.

Haunt(85/100) Man, it doesnt get better than a truly unnerving, sick horror movie. Plus, nothing supernatural. Making it even worse(better). There were a few stupid decisions by the main characters, but I was able to easily overlook that because of the uneasiness I felt throughout the whole movie. The scares are definitely earned. I got reruns of The League on tv now to get my mind on something else before bed. This definitely goes into the rewatch pile.

I went back and found a thread from a few years ago where there was someone who knew FAR more about the Phantasm series than anybody I'd ever seen, because I was gonna post what he said in here due to all the Phantasm talk.

And it was you. And this was what you said:
quote:

The first Phantasm movie is a cult classic. It is an independent produced movie that had a budget well under one million but grossed over 30 million. It was a surprising hit at the movies.

Now after the second movie, it became a direct to video series and the rest of movies couldn't match the first. The first movie has aged really well because no other horror movie was like it since.

The silver orbs are the most iconic of the series. The tall man puts human brains in the orbs and they are somewhat conscious. In Phantasm Ravager they become as large as buildings and use lasers destructive enough to destroy several blocks. Those are the tall man's best weapons and he probably has millions at his disposal.

The tall man is one of the most sophisticated villains in horror movies and very mysterious. He has many abilities and a vast army of reanimated dwarfs, soldiers and deadly orbs.

He has accomplished a feat that many villains would drool over and that is world conquest. He did so with an alien virus that kills most of mankind that has no vaccine or cure. Then governments and nations collapsed. The tall man uses his orbs especially the larger ones to lay waste to cites and armies all around the world. Reggie one of the main protagonists is part of the resistance and the only ones to slow him down.

The tall was known as Jebidiah Morningside. He was a mortician during the events of the civil war. He was obsessed with death and the afterlife. He ended up inventing a portal that would travel through space and time. He went into the portal but came backed changed as the tall man.

The only weakness he has is that the mortal body he inhabits but as the tall man explained in the last movie, he has tens of thousands that look just like him and will come back through the portal from a different dimension as a replacement. But even as a human, he has incredible strength on par with Jason and Micheal and still very hard to kill.

Eh, just watched this and it was ok. Definitely some questionable decisions by main characters.

It is one of those movies, kind of like A Christmas Story does with making you feel like a kid again, where it just puts me in the Halloween mood. It gets me feeling like I'm a kid again int he Halloween season. It is a very solid movie in its own right, but it also just really has a good nostalgia feel to it.

I’ve always said the same. Michael Myers was already a legend so people were upset not to see him. 40 years later 3 is now a cult classic on its own, but I feel like it was unjustly hated and kinda brushed under the rug for years simply bc it had “Halloween” in the title. I’d seen all the Myers films through H20 before I knew this one even existed.

Unrelated, one of my favorite franchises has long been Scream. I really liked how both of the recent ones tied into the rest while maintaining the meta/satirical themes for modern times. 5 & 6 are easily the best since the original imo.

I had never heard of Them, other than the 50s movie about giant ants, before seeing it mentioned here recently. It was mentioned alongside all the French extreme movies like High Tension, Martyrs, etc. I watched it last night and I don't know what it has in common with those other movies other than its in French. I really didn't like this at all. Almost no blood or violence even. It one of those home invasion/stalker type movies that, as an American, really just annoy me. Why not just shoot them? This movie was even worse because the bad guys were a group of unarmed, a-hole kids. The main guy could have easily just kicked all their asses. Not a good movie.

Also watched a Fulci movie called Aenigma last night. No zombies and not gory but was ok overall.

Man I just don’t get the love for Haunt in this thread. It was very mediocre at best for me.

I am medium on it.

Its hard to find truly scary movies. Not campy horror/comedy. Not gory movies or just torture porn. Movies that are just scary.

I agree, I’m burnt out on jump scares. Need something truly scary through story and atmosphere. I don’t know if movies like this are even made anymore.

Try House of the Devil (2009). It's light on jump scares and heavy on mood and atmosphere...great atmosphere throughout the whole movie. It's basically a throwback to those kinds of movies from the 80s, and even looks like one. It's a slow-building movie, but has a decent payoff and I liked it a lot.

Not sure if posted already but feel like Night of the Creeps is an awesome underrated 80s classic that never gets brought up nearly enough.

Tom Atkins is a legend in this

Bro, that's a hugely popular horror segment these days. I'll send recs when I'm out of court.
