So, assuming that your theory is correct, that they somehow, in some inexplicable way, get Dom to this "false reality"...whose dream is it?

We've established that Ariadne designed the level.

But who is the dreamer? Is it someone other than Dom? If it isn't, and it's Dom's dream, how can Ariadne and the rest of the team ensure Dom has "found happiness" if they aren't there to monitor whether or not he has entered the dream they want him to enter?

And, if it is a shared dream, who is the dreamer, and why would they risk their own life hosting this dream just for Dom to find happiness?

Any way you can edit (or stop) the Memento talk? I still have yet to see it, and would like to not be spurled in an Inception thread. Preesh.

There are no guarrantees in life. No one is promising a guarrnatee of happiness. It's a leap of faith. I think it's Cobb's own dream, based off his memories. There's no need to monitor it as they can't change his reality or he'd reject it. I think Cobb is permanently asleep like those in the dream rrom, unable to ever wake up.

And cocomo... I gave spoiler warnings. And the movie is 10 years old. If you haven't gotten to it by now, it's not that important to you. I don't believe in an all-time kibosh on talking about old movies. I gave a spoiler warning for a 10 year old movie that is remarkably similar to the movie that is the subject of the thread, made by the same director. Memento may also hold the key to understanding this movie as it is Nolan's last original work (yes, it was an adapted screenplay... from his own short story).

It was actually his brother's story, B. Have you ever read it? How Nolan crafted Memento out of that story is another mark of his genius.

They weren't permanently asleep. They went there for only 3-4 hours a day, equating to 40 hours in the dream.

A couple pages back.

Same with Inception. What a double bill these two movies will make. I think they are companion pieces. Inception is merely the positive version of Memento.

If it's the positive version, then surely the protagonist has found happiness.

Although, you said you believe Dom to be the dreamer, meaning the others have no way of knowing if he accessed this particular dream or not.

Which means they risked the life of their friend, hoping he would access this particular dream out of billions, not knowing whether or not he has reached "happiness" in his dream.

Yes, I have. It's an amzing insight in how to intepret the movie which is radically different.

As to Cs' point, I fail to see how a leap of faith is a guarrantee. It can be positive without being an assurance. Things are uncertain, even in a positive ending.

Right, I get that. I've just never seen it, and didn't even know it was a Nolan movie until recently (which made me become more interested in seeing it, whereas I wasn't before). A simple "no" would have sufficed, to a simple request of not getting into Memento spoilers in an Inception thread.

I was just explaining why I wasn't going to delete my comments. I'll keep the spoiler warning obviously, but I thought you deserved more explanation than just a "no".

That really means a lot.

And no biggie..I just didn't want this to turn into a memento thread, cuz then I'd have to stop following it.

SLIGHT MEMENTO SPOILER

I doubt that's what he meant by positive. Inception is the creation of new memories within the subject, Memento the inverse.

Well, its the creation of a positive memory in Cobb. It's an attempt to make him happy. Positive beats negative in Inception.

It was so different because they wrote them completely separately at the same time. Jonathon just pitched the simple short story idea of a guy who can't make new memories and seeks revenge. Chris asked permission to take the idea and write a screenplay and actually finished the screenplay before the short story, which is why it was nominated as an original screenplay and not an adaptation.
