I wanted to add my input on this...
As far as the movie goes, it was great. I had high expectations and they were pretty much met during the movie. Still some questions why they did some things to end the movie, etc.
In any case, Ledger was unbelievable. I've seen it twice now and it simply amazes me the voices he used, all the different pitches and the way he delivered his words was incredible to watch. His body language and the whole roll could not have been done better in my opinion. I've read someone say this is the best action movie of all time, I wouldn't go that far. I've seen a lot of Ledger's movies and I don't think there are that many actors who can transform themselves as well as he has done in all his movies (visual, voice). (From Brokeback to the Joker, etc)
Oscar worthy, definitely. He delivered the roll he was given and people will always remember the performance as it was superb.
There is no better villain that is so twisted yet so funny and interesting to watch.

I think if Ledger hadn't died, some of his scenes might have wound up on the cutting room floor.

I never saw the scene that was in every trailer where joker was walking down the street with a knife

After Batman wrecks the batcycle, he is walking toward him with the knife.

I'm wondering who will get the unfortunate role of playing The Joker next time? I say unfortunate because Ledger nailed that one and I don't think anybody can touch it with a ten foot pole.

You seriously thought Jack's Joker was good?
Alright, see this is what I don't get. Why the hell would Ledger's performance have anything to do with the way Jack's performance is viewed?
They were two totally different movies, in different eras, by different directors. If you want to criticize The Joker as played by Jack, then criticize Burton or the writers for not coming up with Nolan's vision for the story.
Jack was great as The Joker IMO and the fact that Ledger's performance was also great does NOTHING to change that. Comments like this are pretty clear proof that this whole fanboy obsession with Nolan, Bale, and especially Ledger after his passing is totally altering the way people are looking at a fairly straightforward story that was just directed and acted very well.

Totally agree that it felt a little too long and very repetitive at points.

spoilers....
There were a couple of things that continued or that were started but never quite developed....probably a problem with so many layers....
bringing up scarecrow, the chinese business man....and the crazy kidnapping with a balloon which caught a plane....there were a couple too many "layers"....still loved the movie though. Need to see it again because the end went so fast.

why put in a previous character for no reason? its actually a pretty valid question

Because at the end of Batman Begins Gordon says that Scarecrow is still at large. Thus he was in DK to finish his character story.

I saw a show on the making of TDK that said all the Technology involved in the movie either exists or is being worked on right now.

Maybe that's your scene...
I thought/liked that it showed what happened to Scarecrow after he's all drugged up, tazer still hanging out of him, and goes riding off on that horse at the end of Begins. I just took it a as a wink to Begins.

The only problem I had with Scarecrow, was him wearing his mask. In BB he only wore it after the toxin had been absorbed to scare people. He looked rather hokey in that scene IMO.

Not like the overall scene is useless...scarecrow could have been just as easily replaced with another thug...but why not use the opportunity?
The scene is needed to show Batman on a regular "crime" attack, the civilian copycat problem which is used as a major plot point later on, and provide an in-story reason for Bale's new suit requests to be filled.
Outside of a handful of little 15 second scenes, I really don't think there is anything that can really be excluded.

I dug it. He IS a Batman villain after all. To each, their own.

Didn't he wear it for pretty much for all of his appearances after he was sprayed though? The mask shielded him from the effects/scared his victims prior, but he used it as part of his identity after.
