Ben looks like he might start hyperventilating when Jimmy brings up the movie. My God, Ben knows how bad this thing is. I bet he's fricking regretting the moment he decided to work with DC. It's a fricking shame.

Yea, you could just tell with the look on his face he knows this isn't going to end well

Nah, he can come out of this with his head held high. He was great. I'm really looking forward to him directing the stand alone Batman film.

I was worried that people would not like Batman blatantly killing people. But if people are OK with that, I definitely saw some cool shite in that warehouse scene. That was one of the only times I felt like that movie delivered. I wouldn't mind Ben doing more Batman movies.

Is spot on, even from the MoS perspective.

I was one of those that really liked MoS. Really. I defended Synder's new angle on Superman...how he wouldn't be trusted at first (think Superman The Movie when Supes saves Lois and catches the helicopter and people cheer)...I loved the fact that he felt like a true outcast and even was ok with the take on Pa Kent and his desire to keep the powers hidden at all costs. Finally, I was ok with all the damage because he was new to all of this and other than Syder's after the fact pretending that hundreds of thousands would NOT have died, I was ok with all of it...

But I was ok with it because it felt like it was simply a new starting point to get to the same place where Superman would BECOME frickING SUPERMAN. Instead, it seems like Snyder simply didn't like Superman as he's written and wanted to alter the character and has continued to remake him.

Same with Bats. Killing fools? Come the frick on. I mean...there's just no way around defending that take, as it literally takes the final card which makes him who he away. I love the diea of making him brutal...that's fine, and actually perfect. But killing bad guys? May as well have given him a completely different origin story as well... Just no.

Not only were these characters not broken, but they were essentially ready made for any movie maker to plop them on the fricking screen and kill it. Comics are fricking story boards! Assuming you can do the technical aspects of making a movie, ripping stories from ready made source materials is almost not fair! It's like you have to be TRYING to frick with that formula...

You people do realize there is a connection with this and the Robin suit hanging in his batcave, right? There is a reason he has changed.

I haven't seen the movie yet but that's a basic psych eval

Affleck and Gadot get to come out of this with reviews saying they were the best or only good thing in the movie. Gadot may be nervous because the expectations for her movie just got raised high.

Then again, the bar may be so low with the reviewers after this, they may applaud a decent Wonder Woman or Batfleck movie.

This reminds me of a Lost thread.

So general audiences are supposed to see the Robin suit, know that this is post Killing Joke Batman, and know that he's an old jaded killer?

That's a leap. He's Batman.

He's killed Superman...in more ways than one.

This may sound corny, but I always looked up to Supes. He was an ideal you could strive to be like. His morality was as perfect as his physical attributes. He was the greatest hero of all time.

Again...it would be an unnecessary change to the core of the character. It's part of what makes the Batman universe so maddening..because as the reader/viewer you often times WANT him to go the extra bit and fricking kill Joker (yeah...Dark Knight Rises, I know...) but he's always the better man. He's a fricking hero...not an antihero.

Batman, despite his brutality is NOT Punisher, so why would DC allow Snyder to turn him into that?

I'm glad that they don't dumb down the comic book trivia for the general audience. The only misstep that I saw was Flash in the dream. If I hadn't read the spoilers even I wouldn't have known what or who that was.

I do want to point out that I called Superman getting killed months ago and some of you told me that would be stupid, dumb, what have you.....you were one of them.

This version of the Wayne's murder was my favorite of all of them. They even had them coming out of Zorro. That was an awesome detail. Plus Excalibur was the next feature (to set the date as 1981). Can't wait to see that part again.

Definitely the hottest Martha Wayne.

I also think I remember Alfred saying something like it can turn good man bad. I feel like in comic book movies we complain that there is too much exposition at times. The first half of this movie was a ton of exposition, but it did not build the characters or build any motives. It was point A to point B. There could have been a 3 minute scene where Alfred scolds Bruce on how he has changed after Robin's death, and that he has repeatedly broken his own code. Then it is explained, it build Bruce's struggle, give Alfred a little depth, and makes sense as to why Batman spared Superman. 3 minutes is all it would take.

I feel this movie was a complete mess and that if they had explained a bit more and provided some motives and character building it could have been a great movie. The pieces were there. He just couldn't put them together in a coherent story.

What do you think is an appropriate age for this film? I'd say it's much too dark for anyone under 12.

Agreed, and kids will most likely be bored by it. Some of the kids next to me were very restless throughout the film.

Snyder thought he could out Nolan Nolan with MoS (and it sounds like here too), he specifically thinks he's creating a better Superman. He's making it "mythological," see those quotes above.

Also, I do find it funny that the word joyless is being thrown around here in reactions and critic reviews. There were a few of us calling MoS specifically that.

October 2014

quote:

Because Man of Steel was joyless. It's not even about serious vs. non-serious. Man of Steel just took itself way to seriously. Tried to be The Dark Knight and collapsed under the weight of those expectations. It had a lot of good pieces but the final product was neither heroic, nor fun, nor meaningful/impactful. If you want a serious film, you have to execute much better than MoS did. If there were more weight in the choices, more thoughtfulness in the outcome, it might have worked better.

August 2014

quote:

Not only that, but the critique in the second article is spot on. Unless your film is REALLY good, and it has something important to say, than an ultra seriousness can work. If you miss the mark at all it becomes pretentious. I would say joyless as well. That's the issue. That level of seriousness and attempted (but failed) gravitas was a problem for MoS.

Meh. I don't regret seeing it but it wasn't what I hoped it would be. Only two good Batman films in like 8 attempts. Sad.
