The more I watch this movie the more I like it. Nolte & Mac Davis were great in it. Shows how crazy you had to be to put yourself through all that abuse to your body playing professional football and how much bs you had to deal with behind the scenes.
Great secondary casting as well with the guy who played Joe Bob, B.A. The head coach, John Matuszak,Charles Durning as the annoying loud mouth assistant coach etc.

Dayle Hadden (Charlotte) - One of my all-time favorites...

One of the best sports movies of all time. So many great quotes:
quote:
O.W: “Every time I call it a business, you call it a game! And every time I call it a game, you call it a business!”
quote:
Coach Johnson: "This is national TV. So don't pick your noses or scratch your nuts."
quote:
Maxwell: "You know Hartman, goodie-two-shoes is fidgeting around like a one-legged cat trying to bury sh*t on a frozen pond, until old Seth fixes him a couple of pink poontang specials."

"It's not gross. shite, gross is when you go and kiss your grandpa good night, and he sticks his tongue down your throat. That's gross."

Joe Bob's Fine Foods. Eat here, or I'll kill you.
I hurt Seth. Dammit, we all hurt.

The gf of the owner's fig brother that Nolte was banging was hot too.
(just found out she's from Springhill, LA)
Her sister Sherry was married to George Peppard

It was said to be a very accurate depiction of life as an NFL player in the 70's.

Before salaries blew up. You had to play or you lost your spot so I am sure a large chunk of the players were hooked on prescription meds. I always have this movie near the top of all sports movies. Everyone was great.

Had seen bits and pieces of it over the years, and had also read the original book by Peter Gent.
A few weeks ago I had injured my foot and had to stay off it so was home from work. It happened to come on at 10:30 AM, so I watched it all the way through.
Dang, what a great movie. First of all, it was a very true adaptation of the novel, which I appreciated as it was already a GREAT story. Secondly, it was just an entertaining, fun film to watch. Finally, it's a great period piece from the mid-1970s, in terms of not only appearance (hairstyles, fashion, cars, architecture, smoking) but also of attitude: that anti-establishment post-Watergate feeling of not trusting anyone in power; that hedonistic period of free living between the hippie 60s and disco late 70s, and Nolte's role of Phil as an individualistic everyman in that era. Good stuff.
I would recommend to anyone else who liked the movie to also read the book, and also read Peter Gent's follow-up effort The Franchise --not a sequel, but a similar story that follows an individualistic Heisman-winning QB from college to a new expansion franchise in Texas (also loosely based on the Cowboys). I read it in college and loved it.

Jeee-sus Joe Bob, we hurt him bad, man.
F*ck him! F*ck him. Huddle up. Huddle up!
After 2007, I’ve always referred to that play as the Glenn Dorsey play. F*ck Chaz Ramsey.

Overlooked and underappreciated.
The scene at the beginning where Nolte is remembering the different plays where he took hits and the corresponding soreness is gold.

Better football through chemistry.

Gent played WR for the Cowboys during the end of the Dandy Don Merideth era. He changed the characters only enough to prevent being sued. J. D Spradling was so good as the "Tom Landry" character.

My favorite sports movie with the great line, ""Do you speak Canadian at all?"To Nolte character after he leaves the team.

Because Elliott was supposedly based on Gent, Dandy Don said after the book was released, “if I had known Gent was so good, I’d have thrown to him more.”
