I hope we are getting a Black Sails treatment of the story and not a children’s movie, given Ridley is directing. Jackman already has a violent retelling of Robin Hood coming out in a few weeks called The Death of Robin Hood. Muppet Treasure Island already perfected it. Second place is Treasure Planet.

Ridley Scott is one of the most active 88 year old directors I've ever heard of

Aside from the Martian, he's gotten pretty long in the tooth recently.

I get what you’re saying but isn’t Treasure Island really a coming of age story/children’s adventure novel? If you’re going to do a gritty, violent pirate story why not just do a LJS prequel instead of trying to make Treasure Island something it’s not?

Do it in the same vein as PotC/ first three Indiana Jones movies and I think everyone is satisfied. Just a fun, action packed, adventure film with a charismatic and talented leading actor.

Kind of have Tom Holland fatigue but he would actually be perfect for the Jim Hawkins protagonist character

Recently listened to the book while driving home over the holidays and I can see an opportunity here for a great film with Hugh Jackman.

We have 50+ movies and shows adapting Treasure Island as a classic coming of age story. Let us have one that is adult-oriented.

Black Sails is the only origin story LJS needs.

Then it’s a totally different property. Besides adding cursing what do you do to Treasure Island to make it adult oriented that doesn’t completely change the source material? It just seems like a square peg/round hole situation. It sounds like you’re just wanting an R rated pirate movie with Long John Silver and calling it Treasure Island. Like all these movies with Winnie and the Pooh, Steamboat Wllie, etc. now that are just slasher movies based on beloved children’s characters from decades ago

Violence.

Yes, if it isn’t differentiating itself from the last 50 versions, whats the point of even making it? With Scott’s track record of historical accuracy, it’s most likely what we will get.

It was written for all ages. Due to how graphic most everything seems to be now Treasure Island does read like a children's novel but it's not like this is Dr. Seuss children's stuff.

There's a decent amount of violence and murder, alcoholism, some pretty dark greed, morally grey characters, constant threat of death.

It could easily be a dark movie.

That's already been done to perfection with Black Sails. You literally could not tell a better John Silver origin story than they did.

I definitely get it and see where you’re coming from. Like how Great Expectations could easily be made into a fricked up dark movie. I guess when it comes to Treasure Island I’ve just always thought of it as adventure first and the darker elements are secondary to it kind of like Temple of Doom if I was gonna compare it to a movie in a way to make it more gritty.

I agree but i dont see it as a problem.

Some of the best movies weve ever gotten have been incredibly bastardized versions of other properties. "O brother where art thou" comes to mind.

You can still pay homage to something while completely changing it up.

Ridley Scott's recent efforts and this writer put me in the wait and see category tho

I trust Scott to make a damn good movie and Hugh Jackman is an added bonus. I guess because I’ve always seen TI as adventure with elements of dark and gritty being secondary I’m just having a hard time seeing it as anything other than something like Curse of the Black Pearl or something similar but if anyone call pull off a re-telling of it in a more adult oriented way then it’s definitely Scott. Either way I look forward to it
