If I remember correctly from the cartoon the Dinobots start off as evil.

That's incorrect. They were built by Wheeljack and Ratchet on Earth in the cartoon. Sometimes they got into trouble and didn't listen, but they were never evil.
Now, on the Beast Wars cartoon the character Dinobot started out as a bad guy.
Edit: Recently watched the original series on Netflix.

This. But unfortunately, and Im still not sure why, the three original Dinobots were given the mental capacity of Ryan Lochte and were easily swayed by Megatron for a bit.

In the OG series Grimlock wasn't bigger than Prime but they made him fricking Huge in that trailer

From what I remember Grimlock wasnt the biggest but was the strongest one in the bunch. He actually saved Optimus arse quite a few times on his own. The dinobots had weak brains and were easily manipulated by the decepticons but they always ended up back on the autobots side in the end.

Ah ok...I guess I was getting things mixed up. I tried to rewatch a bit of the original series with my nephew and I turned it off. That is a really really awful cartoon.
