I realize it probably isn't a spoiler, but I put that in the title as a courtesy to those who might not be aware of the premise behind the show.

Anyways...Netflix has apparently gone back and removed Hannah Baker's suicide scene from season one of 13 Reasons Why after two years of backlash. I don't know why they waited this long to do it. I personally didn't have a problem with it but, then again, I don't suffer from depression and don't have suicidal tendencies.

Here's the skinny:

quote:

Netflix has removed a suicide scene from its popular show "13 Reasons Why," more than two years after it was first shown on the streaming platform. The scene shows the teen drama's main character, Hannah Baker, taking her own life in the Season 1 finale –– and it was met with strong backlash from suicide prevention advocates over its graphic nature. Researchers also found a troubling trend in the month after the show premiered.

Ahead of the Season 3 premiere, slated for later this summer, Netflix said in a statement Tuesday that the company wanted to be "mindful" about the ongoing debate around the show.

"We've heard from many young people that '13 Reasons Why' encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help—often for the first time. So on the advice of medical experts... we've decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers of '13 Reasons Why' to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from Season 1."

Personally, I think that show is an abysmal glorification of suicide.

And there are studies which show that it did in fact result in increased suicide rates.

Agreed but I enjoyed the first season

I just don't buy this. But I haven't looked at the data enough.

They need to delete the entire show.

I'm glad they did. Having teenagers and young kids seeing that kind of material isn't good. It can leave a lasting impression on them that leads to problems down the line

Completely agree with this. I've never been a fan of the show for this reason exactly.

I feel like that show was really overrated. I kept waiting for the big twist or it all to come together, and it was basically just..."you all were pretty mean to me."

Never watched the show but curious as to the reason for the backlash.

Was the scene over the top and gratuitous or was it a realistic picture of someone committing suicide?

If the latter, why the backlash?

I'd rather it be over the top and gratuitous. Make it look like suicide is the most awful, painful, frightening thing ever that no one would ever contemplate doing

Young people are always going to suicide. Even more so nowadays, digital world deletes basic human emotional needs in formative years.

Especially with overpopulation, life becomes less precious.

She cut her veins open with a blade and bled out in the bathtub. It was very gruesome and realistic.

Season one was pretty mediocre and season 2 was worse. The ending to season 2 might be of the dumbest things I've seen in a show in a long time

I've never seen this show, but from the stuff I read about it I'm amazed that it ever got green lit.

A lot of people are upset that this scene was removed because its apparently the only scene in the show that actually focuses on the tragedy and brutality of the suicide, the rest of the show just glorifies it.

And apparently the 2nd season was supposed to feature a school shooting but they backed out and re-shot the scene at the last minute. I also read something about a scene with a kid getting raped with a broom?

Seriously, why the frick is this a show?

I agree. The show makes it look like you can win and get back at people with suicide.

The tapes should have been cut out completely. Just show us the fallout that a suicide causes to family and friends and show how we can prevent it from happening again.

Instead this show was apparently written by a 14 year old girl who thinks suicide is the ultimate get back

No problem with it. That scene was rough to watch.

Exactly. Showing the suicide isn’t the problem, though it was probably best not to show it. The problem is that it’s showing suicide as a way to get back at those who wronged you when most likely they don’t give a frick. You only hurt those you love. It isn’t a “gotcha back bitch” tool. It’s an end result of lost hope and the deepest of depression. The show runners missed that as I’m sure the book did as well.

It tried to highlight teenage depression and suicide but they missed the mark. A lot.
