My 7yr old badly wants to watch the Odyssey

He listens to history podcasts all the time including a ton on Ancient Greece and mythology. He just finished listening to a kids version of the Odyssey, he watched the Percy Jackson movies and TV show.
He’s DYING to watch the Odyssey with me and I’m torn. On the one hand I want to encourage his interest and it’s something we can do together. On the other hand, it’s an R rated movie and obviously I’m not sure he’s mature enough to watch it.
I’m not that concerned about the violence and scary stuff, I’m more concerned about the sex stuff, especially if they have depictions of rape which there is a decent amount of in the actual Odyssey.
Anyone have any insight into how much sexual stuff will be in the movie? I mean they can’t show everything in the real story bc it would be a 10hr movie, I looked online but haven’t really found anything concrete on how much of that is in the movie.
TIA for the help

Show him the miniseries from the 90's.

Show him the original Clash of the Titans instead. Move on to Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts after that.

quote:this. It is truly outstanding and Armand Asante is exactly what I imagined Odysseus to be. The rest of the cast is great as well, the locations are spectacular and it’s kid friendly (for the most part there is a little violence)

None of us know anything yet so it's hard to say. I doubt Nolan shows much rape in this one. I think the Rated R is more for the violence

Correct. It’s Rated R for violence and some language. IMDB mentions sexually suggestive scenes and they are usually pretty clear about rape scenes.

Just let him watch O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Despite my opinion of the movie, why not? Assuming it's age appropriate, that is. It's an ancient story which has been told and retold many times over. This is just one version.
As he grows older and realizes that a 5' 1" biological girl playing an ancient Greek warrior is patently absurd, or a black actress playing Helen of Troy is laughably inaccurate historically, he'll wonder why it was even made.

Just watch Troy and Gladiator with him instead.

Get an AMC pass (25 bucks). Book a ticket for yourself, watch it and decide if he can watch it.
If he can, book another ticket under your amc plus and buy his under a child’s ticket price. Spend the same money in the end
Rinse and repeat for future movies
No one here has seen the movie, we’d have no idea what’s in it

Depends on what's more important. Good story and filmmaking or FOMO.

As others have said, we haven’t seen it so we can’t dictate whether it’ll be ok for him to watch. I will say I wonder if he’ll get a bit scared by the cyclops (given what we’ve seen in the trailer) and if might be a little too dark for his age.
My other concern would be runtime. Almost three hours is a long arse time to ask a 7 year old to sit quietly in a dark theater.
Might be better after you’ve seen it yourself and it gets to streaming.

Yea I’ll probably go see it first and make a decision. I don’t think it’ll be too scary, he knows the stories and has watched some pretty scary myth videos and it hasn’t scared him. He’s pretty into it

I love this miniseries and is the definitive film version in my opinion

Kirk Douglas’s “Ulysses” (1954) is fairly kid-friendly and covers much of the Odyssey. The Armand Assante version also works just fine for kids.
But judging from your son’s interest in the Classics, I would suggest actually reading Homer with him. No need to do it in big chunks or everyday… but what if you read the Cyclops cave episode for instance and asked him how he would have solved the problem? I’m telling you… your kid would love something like that.

It's rated-R.
I remember wanting to badly see Saving Private Ryan when it was released in 1998. However, I was only 11 and my parents would not allow it. I'm not telling you how to parent but if it were me I'd wait a few years.
